The biggest drop is probably the one under the high trestle. Good surfing at the ledges a couple hundred yards above the Cuttingsville bridge. bn[bnCount] = new Array("1069617081990","	The Clarendon Gorge is a 2.5 mile class 3-4 run (at low water) on the Mill River in Clarendon. It's actually 2 gorges separated by a mile and a half of easy water, which is split by a fun cascade drop half way down. The average gradient for the run is 90'/mile. The put-in is at the Appalachian/Long Trail trailhead on route 103 southeast of Rutland, and the takeout is just off route 7b where the river goes under route 7.
There's currently no gauge (I hope to fix that soon), but the level was low: the river above the gorge was too low to paddle. We started just upstream of the suspension footbridge on river right. The entrance to the upper gorge is through a narrow chute that has a few hidden rocks at this level. The gorge is 0.3 mile of class 3-4 pool/drop ledges with a gradient of 140'/mile. Another foot of water would definitely push it up to class 4. The scenery is great…high rock walls topped with overhanging hemlocks.
When you exit the gorge there's 0.75 mile of class 1-2 water (barely passable in spots at this level) until you reach the class 4 drop at the covered bridge. You'll see the bridge below and the old mill building on the right. Scout from river left (the mill is now a private residence and the right bank is posted land). The cascade drops about 20' in 3 steps, the last being the largest. At this level you can start center or right, and finish right. More water might open up a left side option.
From here it's more class 1-2, about a mile, to the class 5 entrance to the lower gorge (known locally as \"Devil's Gorge\"). Take out on the right when you see the walls of the gorge closing in ahead. The portage is also class 5, climbing up and over the slippery marble ledges, then 25' down a muddy crack in the rock and the near vertical gorge wall. (Or maybe otter in if you can find a place to perch on the ledges?) The lower gorge is extremely narrow (less than 10' in places), with higher, darker walls (80-100') and slightly bigger drops than the upper gorge. The gradient here is 175'/mile. Spectacular! You'd never know you were within a few hundred yards of a 4 lane highway and not far off the end of a runway. About 0.4 mile of pool/drop ledges bring you to the end of the gorge, then it's a few hundred yards of moving flatwater to the take-out at the rocky beach on river right upstream of the route 7 bridge.
","Nov 23,2003","Jim Zamecnik","JimZinVT@adelphia.net");bnCount++;

Don't let this entirely scare you though. There is a lot of myth surrounding this run, and the parts above and below the Birth Canal are awesome pedal-to-the-metal class IV when the New Haven is at 300 cfs or better. I think of the run in four stages:

First, the top section, from Readsboro Falls to where the river crosses under the road. About a mile. There is a cl V drop at the top (Readsboro Falls) a IV right after it (Holey Holey Holey) and then a long section of awesome cl III+ boogie water, total non-stop fun.

From the bridge down are about four or five cl IV New Haven Ledges-type drops. Then a section of easier water.

The Tunnel Trio is three drops right before the river goes under the road again. Tunnel Falls is a cl IV waterslide, followed by Breather another cl IV deal. Then comes Tunnel Vision, a large cl V drop of much fame. There is a cool rapid in the tunnel too, paddling in there is very strange!

From the Tunnel to the take out is the best section. It's pedal-to-the-metal small class IV drops the whole way. You bang right down into Readsboro, where two larger cl IV drops, High Chair and Low Chair await. These are just above and just below the gauge, right behind Readsboro General Store. Put in at the covered bridge on Bacon Rd, just off route 3. Immediately there is a series of class II+ drops with big waves and lots of surf. The rest of the run to Canaan is fairly mild and straightforward, but there are a lot of surf possibilities if you're looking for them. (8 miles; ~3 hrs).

Beecher Falls is always fun. You can run it in seconds, or spend an hour or more in the many eddies and waves. River left at the top provides the most playspots, although there is a nice table rock on river right at low water. A series of 3 or 4 ledges provide ample play opportunities and you can work back and forth across the river.

After a mile or so of flatwater, you come to the dam in Canaan. A long carry down Powerhouse Road brings you to a nice boat launch just below the bridge in town.

Just below the bridge there is a nice drop with a long wave train and two strong eddies on either side. It is a fun playspot, and I can be found there on spring and fall afternoons while my kids are at baseball or soccer practice. The character of the drop here is constantly changing due to river levels and the output from the powerhouse. Depending on local power needs, it can drop and rise again a foot or more in an hour, and different water levels offer different challenges in that time. It is a fun spot to play while you wait for your friends to finish shuttling cars!","Apr 4,2005","Mark Lienau","mlienau@northcountryschools.org",false);bnCount++;

There are two problems though.

First, at the bottom of Backyard Boating the boulder seive on river left is still there but has gotten much better. There is not nearly as much water flowing under the boulder because the seive has seemed to fill up with debris, this is good. However, the narrow chute to the left of the seive has gotten harder to run because of boulder shifts. There is high (high!) pinning potential, (I did pin there), but there is excellent safety set up. It is strange in that, at low water,

it is a difficult class 5 move with class 3 consequences as long as someone has set up safety and ready to pull a boat off. I pinned there and Nate pulled my boat off. So the move looks like you will pin more, but just downstream from the really dangerous sieve location.

The next rapid, Video Drop, has some wood in the bottom left part of the cauldron. It looks like it might be out of play; it could be fine. But I can't see what is going on below the surface so there may be branches underwater than are going places that you don't want them to go. We walked it. The rest of the rio is unchanged and good to go.","Apr 11,2005","Robyn Battaile","Rbattail@bsdvt.org",true);bnCount++;

Then a section of class II down to the 2 mile put-in.

There's a gauge on the Brandon Brook, on the bridge at Robinson corner, downstream, river left. Roughly 0.0' or just under is a minimum boatable level for the lower 2 miles of Bingo. A very rough correlation to the USGS Ayers Brook gauge is 4.9' = 0.0' on the bridge gauge. bn[bnCount] = new Array("1114959963609","There's quite a bit of wood in the river this spring. Most of it is easily seen and avoided, but there's one dangerous log. It's immediately below a very tight class 4 drop about 1.75 miles above the takeout. It's river-wide and will be right at water level at medium flow. You will not see it from above the drop. And the log is almost 2' in diam. and well-jammed, so it won't leave without a fight.

Also, this drop has another issue. It's a narrow slot, dropping about 4' and banking left between 2 large boulders. At a \"too low\" flow it appears that about a third of the flow is going *under* the right boulder. I've run this slot twice before with no problems (well, I did flip both times). But I don't think I'll be running it again.

There's another ledge a hundred yards or so below this where my usual line has been a narrow diagonal slide starting far left. At this very low flow you can see that the \"slide\" is actually a very deep narrow crevase in the ledge...narrow enough to jam a kayak in if you were to drive deep enough under the surface? I think I'll be looking at a different line next time.

I'm by no means an expert creek runner, but I thought I'd get this info out there so you can make your own decisions.","May 1,2005","Jim Z","jimzinvt@adelphia.net",true);bnCount++;
