The winter/spring VPC pool sessions have concluded for 2014.
Thanks to everyone who helped make them a success!
Please SCROLL DOWN to take advantage of this pre-registration page, so that we have a reasonable head count for each of the upcoming sessions. Please note the following (and sorry for any prior confusion concerning the First in Fitness sessions!):
- The First in Fitness sessions start at 7:00 PM, and occur on selected Sunday evenings in February and March as shown below.
- The University of Vermont sessions start at 6:00 PM, and occur on selected Saturday evenings in January, February, and March as shown below.
- The signup form for some sessions includes check boxes for indicating your interest in rolling lessons and a loaner boat.
- Pool session participants must be VPC members.
You can join at the first session you attend.
- The basic pool session fee is $10.
- This year, there is a $10 instructional fee for rolling instruction. This fee does not apply if you just want to practice on your own, with occasional pointers from peers.

[By the way, YouTube has some excellent instructional kayak rolling videos by Chris Spelius of Expediciones Chile. Also see this outstanding video on Vimeo, from H2ODreams.com.]
More on fees: The pool session fee is $10, plus an additional $5 insurance fee if you are not a member of the American Canoe Association (ACA). Note that you must still pay the $5 insurance fee per session if you don't belong to the ACA.
NOTE: If you plan on attending all 5 of the UVM sessions, you can pay a one-time series fee of $40.
You can also join the VPC (or renew) for $10 ($12 for a family). If you haven't previously been a member of the ACA you can become a member at the session; they offer a 6-month introductory membership for $15.
ACA Waiver: An ACA waiver form must be completed during or prior to your first pool session. It will help get the session underway quicker if you print and fill out the waiver prior to your arrival, and bring it with you. (You can also mail it to Hugh Pritchard, VPC Treasurer, 37 Terrace Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.)
ONLINE WAIVERS: During 2012 the ACA website introduced support for online completion of their adult and minor waiver forms, and in 2013 they enhanced it! You have to be logged in as an ACA member or a Guest member on the website in order to use this feature. We encourage you to do so; it will save time at the pool sessions and result in consistently legible waivers for submission to the ACA. The forms can be accessed from the website's navigation bar. Select Insurance > Online Waivers or go to this page.
Note on UVM Parking: The UVM pool sessions are held in the pool within UVM's athletic complex. Access is from a lot just uphill from the parking garage on Spear Street (in the 'U' of the complex). UVM is a Division 1 hockey school, and there are home games on pool session nights (Saturday nights) in February and early March. The games start at 7 PM, and our sessions start at 6 PM, so you will have access to the loading dock near the pool entrance. However, the parking attendants will ask you to park on the top level of the parking garage after you unload your boats and gear. It is important to not be late on these evenings, because UVM hockey fans start arriving in force not long after 6 PM. Our sessions end well before the games do, so departure won't be difficult.
[Update for 2014: We have scheduled the 5 UVM sessions this year to avoid coinciding with the home games for the 2013-2014 hockey season. They won't be a problem except in the very unlikely event that UVM reschedules some of the games.]
Any boat you use in the UVM pool must be thoroughly cleaned beforehand!!
Dirt, twigs, or leaves found in or around the pool may result in us being banned from future use of the facility.
[A faucet with a hose and a large plastic tub are available for final rinses. That said, we ask that you please do as much cleaning as possible before you come to your first session.]
