At this level the final rapid (Excelsior) and the covered bridge drop are class III and the rest of the rapids are class II.
The gauge stick on river right at the put-in is leaning about 35 degrees and is held in that position by a huge boulder. Because it is tipped in this way, the actual reading on it was 4.4 or 4.5 feet, so I surmise that if the stick were straight up and down it would probably be reading just 4.1.
If anyone knows of a website that reports the Mascoma level in real-time, please let me know. The former USGS real-time gauge fell victim to budget cuts in 2004, but the NH DES may have taken over the station...
The former takeout on river left after Excelsior Rapid BELOW the trestle is fenced off, so you need to take out now on river left ABOVE the trestle. There is a decent eddy there for disembarking.
