Referred by: Search Engine Comments: Hello paddlers, I am looking to borrow/rent or buy on older squirt boat mold to fit a 165-170 lb person. A friend and I are going to make a squirt to play with in the pool over the winter to keep in shape and have fun until spring. WE are just hackers and therefore don't need the lattest designs, just something that a 165 lb person can easily squirt and cartwheel in flatwater and small current. If you or any of your members have an old squirt mold or know someone who does PLEASE let me know. Email to mckinley@isys.ca Thanks a bunch in advance. Josh

Referred by: Search Engine Phone: (802) 388-9100 Comments: Last winter I ran the rios Jatate, Lacantun and Usumacinta, in southern Mexico, for a book I am writing about the Usu watershed. They are all in remote, rugged rainforest and canyon country where the Maya Zapatista insurgency has its base. Near the Jatate we spent four days at Lake Miramar, in the Montes Azules Bioshpere Reserve, which I wrote about in the August, '97, OUTSIDE. The Maya people there are caneoists of a few millenia standing. They uniformly admired my Mad River Freedom, and I had the good fortune of paddling with a few of them in the lake and a short Class II rapid on the Rio Perlas. Before we left, the community president wrote us a letter requesting formal economic aid in the form of a boat like mine. It is a serious request. The community is trying to attract wilderness-style "eco-tourism." Motor craft are restricted under an agreement with Conservation International. Their own boats are heavy, expensive and hard-to-come-by (though beautiful) dugouts. They need good, well-designed, sturdy canoes to serve the anticipated tourists and for their own transport on the lake. These are virtually nonexistent in the area. If you have an old ABS boat of a traditional length and design, and are willing to part with it for little or nothing, I will be planning to carry down as many as six boats some time in the next 18 months. It is a way to enhance the continuity of a culture for which canoeing is a way of life and ritual exercise, hard-wired in its cosmology, and forge a lasting connection to a tropical region that bears odd parallels to the Northern Forest.

This is a "test" trip for a new commercial enterprise of the Elba Sea Kayak Center. The trip, and you can go for either 2 weeks or just 1, includes lots of kayaking, stay in a hotel, food, equipment, hikes, and guide services. Two weeks is $1,800 US, one week is $1000 US. I have a couple of more spaces available. Already signed up are 2 members of my kayak club, a group from Canada, a woman from Norway, and a fellow from England. If you are interested please email me at bkossy@igc.apc.org and I can answer questions and send you the complete itinerary. Please pass on this information to anyone who may be interested. For more on Elba see www.elbalink.it, on my trip there last fall www.wandering.com, for information on BASK www.bask.org. Thanks Barbara Kossy
