We are looking for a great 3 day trip in Vermont. Not TOO difficult but not boring either. What are some of the best rivers with the most beautiful waterfalls where it is not going to be overcrowded with drunk high school kids? Please help we have a trip planned on Memorial Day.....

Comments: Paddled last Fri. & Sat. on the Missisquoi from Highwater, Quebec to Enosburg Falls, VT with buddy in 17.5 ft. canoe with about 100 lbs of camping gear, trying to get to Lake Champlain. Used AMC River Guide to VT & NH and US and Canadian Topo Maps. River was very low. Unable to put in at North Troy, VT because water was low and only road access is under the rail bridge down a steep 60 -ft bank into a gorge. If someone knows a better way, I'd be grateful for info. Took local advice to put in at Highwater, Que, 1.4 miles up the road from US/CAN border. Very nice flatwater/quickwater paddle for 10 miles to US Customs re-entry at East Richford. Thence many shallows requiring disembarkation and dragging or linign canoe. Portage at Richford as described by AMC Guide. Camped about two miles downstream from Richford. Entertained by beavers. Lined and paddled shallow rapids for next quarter mile. Lined and paddled rapids over washed out dam at Samsonville. At Enosburg Falls, the AMC Guide isn't much help, at least not in low water conditions. It doesn't even mention 0.3 miles of ledge rapids that start about 200 yards below the dam. We had to unload the canoe just to line over the shallows. Took a long time. A much better low water portage is to take out on left at the "DANGER DAM" sign, cross the first bridge and keep going straight down St. Alban's St. for 0.4 miles. Just past the little, square, red brick building on the left at the bottomof the hill, hang a left and go 20 yards through parking lot to where a small creek shown on the topo mao enters the river. This takes you completely past the ledgy rapids. My friend developed medical problems here and we ended the trip. Looking for someone to go from Enosburg Falls to Lake Champlain when the water is higher.

Comments: I know nothing about canoes, kayaks or paddles. But, I have been biking and jogging along this great river/canal for the last couple of months and think a kayak would be a great way to enjoy it even further. I'm 6'2" male 195#'s. I plan to paddle mostly on the Res. and Lakes, occasionally I will take it in the ocean (just past the waves) and on some rivers. Most of my trips will be day trips with the occasional overnight. I have rented a few kayaks and I really like the ability to go quickly with good tracking and some storage portals. There are so many different types of kayaks out there I'm confused which one or type is right for me...I'm thinking a Loon I 13'6" or an Egret 14'6". Any info is greatly appreciated.

Has anyone ever run this creek which follows the Cold River Road? If so, what level does it have to be at? Based on the elevation changes of the road, I'm guessing it to be much fun! Thanks.

Comments: Hello Last week I had an Australian kayak tour operator out in Oona River and we took a cruise around the area and he was really impressed by all the small waterways and islands and the fact that the whole area was unpopulated. Two of the areas that I showed him was Kitkatla Inlet which is about 8 miles south of Oona River down Ogden Channel and the other place is about 25 miles south of Oona River down Petrel Channel which we refer to as the Anger Island Area. You can easily paddle around both these areas for a week as they are big areas. Anger Island area is really impressive because it is a series of islands that is like a maize with names like Cosine Is. TangentIs. Sine Is. and Logarithimic Point. It must been a mathematician that named these islands. This area is really protected and they have an unusual passage called Ala Passage that hooks up with a series of different little inlets called Irie Inlet, Curtis Inlet. One nice feature of this area that the whole area is unpopulated, lots of bird and marine life and protected in all winds. If you follow Ala Passage it connects up into another area that has a series of Inlets and small bays connected out of it and it is called Mink Trap Bay. This is a big area and you can easily use up ten days kayaking around here. I do recommend Anger Island because it is unexplored area and it is sheltered from winds at all times. If you decide to look for charts for the BC coast you might want to look for charts that show Porcher Island as Kitkatla Inlet is at the bottom of Porcher Island. These charts are of Northern British Columbia just below Southeast Alaska. The community of Oona River is 25 miles south of Oona River on the east side as Porcher Island is about 15 miles long. The other chart that you would want is Petrel Channel and Approaches which shows the channel that goes down to Anger Island. Petrel Channel is formed between the islands of Pitt Island and McCaulley Island. You can drive to Prince Rupert from Vancouver or catch the ferry from Port Hardy on the top of Vancouver Island to Prince Rupert. We have a boat that is a 37 foot Deltaga hull boat and it is no problem putting a number of kayaks on deck. We usually have people leave their vechile at our house in the Prince Rupert area here and it is only a 5 minute walk down to the dock. The trip to Oona River is about 3 hours and we have two houses out there where we use one of the houses for ourselves and the other 3 bedroom house we use for our guests. We shuttle people and organize group tours and you can check out our web page at http://www.marlintravel.com/oona.htm. However, when people call us we try to accomodate them in organizing a trip to fit their needs as some people do day trips out of Oona River and some people want to do 7-10 day trips down in remote areas. If any of this interests you give me a call at 250-628-3302 or bproctor@mail.kaien.com and I can provide you with more information
Thank you

Comments: To Kevin from PA/VT: the Cold River is a wonderful creek, class II-III+, no gauge that I know of. Did have a couple of river-wide strainers last weekend (6/14/98). One larger drop (8-10ft) toward the end at a rock dam, recommend shore scout river right the first time. Run it right down the middle at most water levels. I believe Rutland to Shrewsbury is uphill--recommend running it the other way.

Comments: Paddled Mad River from Moretown Dam 6/15 and 6/17. 6/15 level was 5.5 feet at iron bridge - more wavy and less technical. 6/17 level was down to 4.25 feet at 6:00 pm put-in. One of our group coming from Waitsfield said that a surge of water from the AM deluge over Warren was making it's way down, and sure enough, the gauge read 6.0 feet when we passed by at 8:15 pm. Lots of good surfing spots, and the glassy wave at the final drop was just starting to form up nicely.
