Referred by: "confessed VPC WWW denizen" Comments: ! My name is Julie Huldin and I'm moving back to Vermont after living in Marquette,Michigan, Durango Colorado and Nevada City, California (not in that order). I took a beginning kayak course with Terry and John (instructors...bill? too??? I'm bad with names) and Amy(student) way back in 1996. I'm especially excited to paddle in Vermont again in my very own boat... thanks for the loaner Tom. I hope to make a fall trip with the club after August 18th when I arrive in Burlington. If any of you sports oriented individuals living near St. Michael's College need a roommate-- or you have a friend who has a shack I can live in until I find a place-- please respond! I have a very mild mannered dog who is 2 years old and needs lots of space to run. I'm 34 (old to be just starting teaching certification) and will be a phantom roommate with my busy schedule. Additionally, I'm penurious.. so anything in the area of 225$ month within 3 to 6 miles from the college would be fantastic! Looking forward to seeing you again and meeting new members! I have paddled mostly class II-III rivers (mostly the deerfield river). I have a place to stay in central VT, but I don't know the rivers around. I'd also like to explore some of Maine's rivers.

Referred by: Bow and Stern Comments: The end of June 1998 floods have significantly altered the New Haven River--especially the Ledges between Linclon and Bristol. Every rapid is different. Any rock smaller than 3-4 feet in diameter (and many larger) has been moved. The old wooden dam at Bartlett's Falls (Toaster) is now gone. As of 1 July 1998, the pool at the bottom had not yet been reprobed for depth and timbers/new boulders. The Lincoln road is closed due to bank erosion. Please treat this as a new river and scout appropriately.

Referred by: Bow and Stern Comments: Rumor has it that one kayaker broke their leg running a rapid above Bartlett's Falls (Toaster) on the New Haven Ledges on Sunday 5 July and that a second kayaker had a boat pinned under the falls. Does anyone have any firm information?

Referred by: Bow and Stern Comments: John--rumors only: a New York paddler in a group with boaters from Warren, VT hurt in a class III drop with a tib/fib fracture (while still in his boat??). No news about the other boater and the pin at Toaster, except that he was okay. We've run the river now multiple times--no harder, just different. I think less interesting. The dam out at Toaster makes for a slide at the top which gives lots of speed coming off of the drop. Call me if it rains.

Referred by: Bow and Stern (Favorite) Website: Friends of the Winooski River Comments: Hi -- Please check out Friends of the Winooski River web site! FWR (& others) are sponsoring a big, multi-day river event in Montpelier in September. There are 2 river clean-ups: 1 on 9/10 for HS students, 1 on 9/13 for community groups/other interested folks. For both clean-ups, WE NEED BOATS. For the clean-up on the 13th, we'd also love more participants. If you have an old canoe or other open boat that's functional, that you wouldn't mind getting dirty, we'd love to borrow it for one or both days. If you are part of a community group that would like to send volunteers out to clean up on the 13th, we'd love to hear from you. And, of course, we encourage everyone to attend the Celebration on September 19th, 9-1, downtown Montpelier - educational riverwalk, sculpting w/river debris, music, parade, ceremony, dance, and lots of FUN around the confluence of the North Branch and the Winooski!
