Comments: I want to do a two or three day stretch of the Otter Creek in a couple of weeks, but I can't figure out where to camp overnight. It looks like the last stretch before Lake Champlain is the best, maybe spending the third day in the Dead Creek, but I'm having problems locating a put in, take out, and camping spot. Does Vergennes to the Lake sound right for a relaxed couple of days? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

Comments: To Peter: Canoe Campimg Vermont is one of the better guides that contains information about Otter Creek. Vergennes to Lake Champlain is a nice stretch, but not very far(5miles?) and would make for a very relaxed couple of days. Also, there is motor boat traffic from the lake to the restaurants in Vergennes on that stretch of the creek. The stretch from Wallingford to either Brandon or Middlebury is nice, with a couple of obstructions to carry around. Middlebury has a waterfall downtown that you want to avoid for sure, then there are four dams and a small gorge that require portages in the next few miles. From the weybridge park, just downstream of the Weybridge dam, the creek is clear until the waterfalls in downtown Vergennes. There is almost no motorboat use upstream from the falls in Vergennes. You con call me at home after Labor Day if you'd like. 802-388-9750

Comments: I will be in Vermont on business during the week of September 7 and will stay over the following weekend, Sept. 12 and 13. I have paddled class III/IV water in the past but due to shoulder surgery I have not paddled for two seasons. The shoulder is better now and I thought next weekend might be a good time to get back on the water. I usually paddle a Dancer. Is it possible to rent a similar boat and get a shuttle (I will probably be alone) at one of the outfitters; if so, which one. Another option would be to hire a guide-private instructor or I could sign up for a class at one of the outfitters, any suggestions. I can bring wetsuit, helmet, etc. but I can't bring boat on airplane. Thanks. Bill

I'VE NEVER BEEN TO VERMONT AND DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHERE TO GO. MAYBE I'M STRANGE, BUT I DO LIKE FLAT WATER, PARTICULARLY QUIET MOUNTAIN LAKES. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

1) Umiak Outdoor Outfitters (Stowe), 802-253-2317, 800-479-3380 (not sure the toll-free # works).
2) Eastern Mountain Sports (S. Burlington), 864-0473. I'm quite sure they rent sea kayaks.
3) Paddleways (Burlington), 660-8606 -- touring and instruction, not sure about rentals.
4) SkiRack/Downhill Edge (Burlington), 862-2282.
5) Smugglers Notch Canoe Touring, 888-937-6266. They rent canoes and kayaks.
6) There is also a small kayak rental booth on the waterfront in Burlington, near Perkins Pier and the Community Boathouse. I don't know the name, or if they have closed for the season. The Burlington Parks & Recreation Dept. might be able to tell you more.

I can afford a new one, but I am interested in what might be available used. (A longer boat with some downriver speed is preferable, e.g., a Pirouette. I'm 5'8", 200 lbs.) Phone: 863-2149.

Comments: Greetings from a warm-water neighbor to the South. I will be in Vermont from Friday, October 16 through Monday, October 19, and would love to paddle while I'm there. If you know of anyone who is planning a class III or IV paddle that weekend and wouldn't mind a tag-along, please e-mail me at henry.chalmers@agg.com, or call me at 404-873-8646 (day), 404-627-1415 (night). I promise to rescue you if you swim and regale you with stories of dry-top-less Southern paddles in the middle of March. I'll be staying in Maples Corner, near Montpelier. Thanks! Henry Chalmers

Comments: Hi All - Just a friendly reminder to *Tread Lightly* at river access points. I was out this weekend working on a streambank that Friends of the Winooski River has been working for 2 years to stabilize and vegetate. The site is on private property along Mill Brook in Jericho, near the intersection of Brown's Trace and Fitzsimonds Rd. We were very disappointed and saddened to see that the top 12-24 inches of the bank has recently been crushed back into a bare dirt shelf, largely destroying this year's work on that part of the bank, just as the vegetation had begun to take hold there. The landowners told us that the only people they had seen there was a group of kayakers either putting in or taking out, which seems consistent with the damage done. Our members and volunteers have put a lot of time and effort into this site. I tried to think of a way people could identify sites under restoration and take special caution there, but all banks should be treated with care. Please take care of our rivers -- Thanks!

Comments: Update on an interesting trip: The last VPC newsletter I received ended with a small announcement of a call for whitewater kayakers to participate in a first descent of a river in western China. The applicants needed to have solid class 4-5 skills. This morning's NPR Morning Edition (10/8) had an interview with Tom McEwan, who is one of 4 kayakers participating in a trip down the Tsang-Po River in Tibet -- the first ever to traverse the entire 140 mile length of the river, whose course runs through a gorge over 16,000 feet deep (3 miles). The expedition is now underway; the interview was by phone from Tibet. I guess these two items refer to the same trip. Anybody know further details? (The Morning Edition segment was brief.)

I'm planning my first VT boating trip for this spring, and I'm very excited to experience the rivers up there. I'm mainly looking for class IV-V creeks. If anyone would care to share information on VT creeks with me, I'd really appreciate it-- I'm having trouble finding a good source! Maybe it's because y'all want to keep your gems a secret, which I understand... but me and my boating partner are nice :) Regards, thanks in advance for any info, -chris
