Hi again folks,

I just wanted remind people of the Wild Onion Canoe/Kayak Flatwater Race happening in Montpelier on the Winooski River to raise money for Friends of the Winooski River (a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the river). Its not a slalom race just a go and see who gets to the finish first. The race will be on Saturday, July 3 and will begin at 3:00 at the high school Racers should show up between 2 and 2:30. The take out will be just before the dog river confluence. Prizes will be awarded too not only for the finisher but for the silliest July 4th river costume too. Contact me if you are interested in racing or even if you want to help out and volunteer. Hope to see you there.

There will be a public hearing held by the Winooski East Redevelopment Council on Thursday June 17 at 5 pm, City Hall, Montpelier. This is a hearing to discuss a development project on the Winooski River on Stonecutter's Way in Montpelier. Friends of the Winooski River would like to encourage people who are concerned about development on river banks to please show up at the hearing and voice their opinion. One of the big "recreation enhancement" things proposed is a boat ramp, but it will be a short paddle to the dam by Grand Union. Call the city of Montpelier to get informed of the project before the hearing. Thanks and hope you can make it.

My neighbors had a "blocksale" this weekend and asked me if I have anything I wanted to put out for sale. Being the typical paddler, I didn't think the average person who frequents "yardsales" and "garagesales" would be interested in what I had to offer (being as while they are out shopping on Saturday morning, whitewater paddlers or out on the river). So, then I had a really bright idea, I'd have my own yardsale on the internet. Go visit my Whitewater Equipment Yardsale (On the Internet) . . .

Thanks,
Wayne

American Canoe Association
SWIFTWATER RESCUE & RECOVERY WORKSHOP
Delaware River at Lambertville, NJ
July 17th & 18th

Regardless of skill, running rivers presents and element of danger. As whitewater paddling continues to grow in popularity and more thrill-seekers push the boundaries of the sport, accidents are inevitable. The A.C.A. Swiftwater Rescue & Recovery Workshop presents a tightly focused look at some of the most useful and current techniques for both self-rescue and the rescue of others on the river. This workshop, taught by Wayne Sundmacher (co-author of "Whitewater Rescue Manual" RMP/McGraw-Hill 1995), was developed for the American Canoe Association and has been enthusiastically received by paddlers nationwide. Topics included are; whitewater swimming skills and strategies; accessing the victim by wading, swimming, or using ropes; stabilizing the victim; how to coordinate the rescue effort; how to make sure that would-be rescuers don't become victims; equipment recovery and unpinning boats; and much more. Don't miss this exciting and informative two-day rescue workshop.

Registration Fee: $110 per person
Manual: Whitewater Rescue Manual (not included)

Check out the review in the gear review section of the North East Paddler's Message Board (www.npmb.com). It is an honest review of the boat. I am located in Western Mass and can deliver to Boston area, Deerfield River, and/or Farmington River fairly easily.

Looking for western VT float trip sugestions...

We're looking for suggestions for a gentle (CL I) overnight float trip in western Vermont to slip in between our planned mid-July canoe camping trips in Maine and in the Adirondacks.

I don't know the rivers in western VT, but I've heard/read things about the Winooski below Montpieler, the upper Lamoille, Otter Creek & the Lemon Fair...

Any suggestions about dependably floatable and campable sections of these or other rivers in western VT would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Praying For Rain

Vermont's summer is great this year it seems
For many of those with big outdoor dreams

Hikers and bikers both will agree
Walkers and swimmers and those by the inland sea

Sailboarders and motor-boaters get their wish
It's nice for the angler who chases the fish

But from the whitewater paddlers point of view
Sorry my friend but things look quite blue

While others ply their outdoor sport without pain
Destined am I to sit here… praying for rain

Oh sure, I can pack up and head for a dam release
But it's far and it's long and my wheels need much grease

I'm a family man with faces that need me and many a chore
So I look for paddling after work - right near my door

But the local play spot this year is so dry
I drop a tear - Oh what a sad aqua being am I

I go on about my business not far from Church and Main
Those passing by know not that inside I am… praying for rain

When finally it comes, I'll call every paddling friend
And expect them to drop everything as if this were the end

If they are as excited as me, they'll go
If not they may have to wait 'til next El Nino

So if you are sympathetic, perhaps I will gain
Someone else who'll help me in… praying for rain
