Hi,
My daughter Katy and I are going to ME for a tandem-paddling Dead River trip Aug. 7 & 8. All are welcome!

Because of our size mismatch (50# vs 200#) we would do better if one of you out there had a performance outfitted ~15 foot OC2 you'd be willing to lend for the weekend. Our only other recourse would be to move the seats closer together in my 16' tripper.

Please let me know if you can help!
(802) 879-1655
BOATFUL@aol.com

Thanks,
Tony

Low water levels got you down? Umiak is offering a class that will teach you the skills to play on almost any river feature. It is called "More With Less" It will be taught by David Su, former senior national slalom champion. He will show you the edge control techniques that lead to more advanced rodeo moves and show you how to play when there is no water. The class is being offered July 10 & Aug 7. The cost is $90.00 and it runs from 9a to 4p. Call 802 253 2317 to register or for more information

The Little River, which is the outflow from the Waterbury Reservoir and is dam released Class II water, is running today from 9a to 8p and through Friday with a similar release schedule. For those of you who have never paddled this river, there are great eddy lines to play on and a small surf wave, at the put in, that you can ender off of if you find the sweet spot The current water temp is 48 F so dress accordingly. The dam is currently undergoing the relicensing process and a group called the Friends of the Little River is working towards recreational releases. If you need directions to the put in or would like info on what you can do to help with the relicensing process or for release schedule info call Umiak Outfitters @ 802-253-2317.

Hi there,

I recently read about something called the Lake Champlain Paddlers Trail in the Free Press. It's basically a series of campsites on the lake that are set up for paddlers on the lake. This concept is appealing to me and I'm interested in taking a canoe trip (sorry, I'm not a kayaker yet) on the lake. I can't seem to find any decent links or groups that have information on it, and the info I found on the Paddlers Trail is short on actual info about paddling on the lake.

1- What is the difficulty level?
2- Can a couple of novices safely and enjoyably cruise the lake?
3- If so, what would you say is a reasonable distance to cover in a day?
4- Do we need a special kind of canoe, or will a standard-run of he mill canoe work well enough?
5- Is there a direction that the wind/water typically flows, ie is it better to travel north-south or south-north on the lake?
6- Are wind and waves prohibitive to an enjoyable trip by canoe?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I couldn't find any other knowledgable sources on paddling in Vermont.

Thanks in advance!

Tom P.
