I am working on a brochure for the VPC. Anyone who has good whitewater photos that would like to share them is encouraged to do so. I am looking for a variety of novice to advanced WW pictures. The main thing is that it be a good quality photograph. You can send them to me electronically at the above address or mail to me at P.O. Box 184, Fairfax,VT 05454. Deadline is March 1st. Thanks.

http://www.acanet.org/

ACANET represents the beginning of a new era in the ACA’s online presence. Those visiting ACANET will see a new user-friendly design and find many great new features that are being added to better serve the nation's paddlers.

These features include:

Concerned paddlers can compose and send letters to elected representatives and federal agencies directly from ACANET. Never before has helping protect the places you paddle been so easy.

ONLINE FORMS- Instructors and event coordinators can now easily download the paperwork they need such as waivers, registration forms, and report forms directly from ACANET using Adobe Acrobat® reader which can also be downloaded from the site.

MORE INFORMATION - By accessing ACANET, paddlers of all disciplines and skill levels will have access to more useful information ranging from tips for beginners to the latest weather and water level information.

SECURE TRANSACTIONS - A secure server that permits safe credit card transactions supports ACANET. Paddlers can join the association more easily and can purchase ACA merchandise online.

This is just the beginning! ACANET will be constantly improving and evolving to better meet the needs of the paddlesports community.

I am looking for advice on buying my first kayak. I am interested in paddling on lakes, ponds and rivers. I have looked at a Perception Swifty and Old Town Loon models. What kind of boat should I get? Does anyone have a good used boat I could buy?

My friend and I will be leaving Richmond, VA on May 20 to spend two weeks in New England. We have been to Vermont once several years ago and paddled the Battenkill, Winooski (below the dam), and Lamoille (above a lake). We would have liked to paddle more, but found it difficult to arrange shuttles with one vehicle -- hence, this message. We are looking for people with whom to paddle while we are in the area. I am an intermediate level open boater with about 15 years experience. My friend paddles a sit-on-top kayak or sometimes paddles tandem with me in an open canoe. Please contact me via e-mail if you know of any trips that we could join. We would be glad to return the favor should you ever come to Virginia. Thanks.

Does anyone out there have any insight as to how the rivers look after this meltdown and rain? I am working 7-7 all weekend and cannot get a good look at them, but I could get Sunday off if there was something good to paddle! Post a reply or call me at 527 - 8328. Thanks.

Jeff LaVerdiere has offered to build an ACA Whitewater Instructors Course covering probably three weekends if we can get another 5 people besides myself to participate. ACA certification is the gold standard for instructors, employment, etc. Costs are about half what you might expect to pay other places. Any takers?

The Winooski at Essex Junction was up to 4,580 cfs at 9:45 PM -- up 870 cfs from 8 hours earlier. A lot of ice should break loose tonight. I'll bet 6,000+ by 8 AM Sunday morning, and 9,500+ by 8 PM.

The flow at the Lamoille's East Georgia gauge is still being reported as "ice".

The season is open at the Chace/Champlain Mill rapids, currently running at 3,600-3,700 cfs.* Three boaters came out at 12:20 PM, and are surfing on the Chace Mill side as I write this. (Several tons of free floating ice came through during the previous two hours.)

[* Looks like my projection for the flow was a little high.]

The Winooski blew past my original projection today:

12,100 cfs at 9:45 AM
15,900 cfs at 1:45 PM, 11.17 feet

Flood stage is 15 feet. The stage graph at 1:45 is just 10-15 degrees short of vertical.
