The Black R. in eastern Vt. was a mellow 2 (runnable down to 1) yesterday evening when John Deming and I ran it at 4 p.m.
Don't travel a long way to run it, 'cause it's a short (though charming) run, and I'm not sure how well it will hold up.

Family Canoe camping Suggestions?

Looking for suggestions for a family canoe camping trip for mid-July. This trip will involve 4 canoes, 4 adults and 4 kids. All are relatively experienced canoe campers (Potomac River Maryland, Edisto River South Carolina, Allegheny Reservoir Pennsylvania, Stillwater Reservoir Adirondacks, Lobster Lake Maine, Buffalo River Arkansas, etc).

The criteria:

Gentle water - Flatwater or class 1. Lake paddling or easy rivers.

Portages - NONE. We're still a few years from cutting down our gear to a portagable amount.

Campsites - Eight people and four tents (to say nothing of the dog). We need room to spread out.

Locale - Within a (long) day's drive north of Maryland. So: New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Ontario, ?????

Trip length - Up to a week or so. But we don't like packing up and moving camp every day; easily satisfied with setting up a backcountry base camp or two and day paddling and exploring from there.

Will recriprocate with favorite canoe camping venues mid-Atlantic and south-east.

Thanks

Mike McCrea

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be celebrating the 50th "birthday" of one of its flood control facilities in Thetford,VT on June 24, 2000. The land around the dam is used for public recreation. Part of the planned celebration will entail both recreation/natural resource oriented non-profit groups and retailers promoting their organization/businesses by having a booth or exhibit or conducting a demonstration emphasizing safe, responsible recreation on Federal lands.

Union Village Dam is the site of a number of different activities, all year round. This event would be an excellent chance to promote your organization/business and display merchandise and information.

For more information on Union Village Dam's upcoming birthday event, i can be contacted at the addess above, or contacted at (802) 295-2855, M-F from 7 A.M.-3:30 P.M.

I am running my raft down the bulls bridge section in CT for the first time on Sat. 4/1/00. I have room for 1 more person in the raft let me know if you'd like to go. Or let me know if you'd like to run it your own boat. Rafts make good probes and tend to clear the way through surfing holes if you follow behind.

Plan to meet at 12:30 PM at the Georgia High Bridge (top of Arrowhead Lake), where we'll organize shuttling up to the put-in. The put-in will be in Fairfax, past the high school (downstream from the Rt 104 bridge). Allow for a couple of hours paddling time. The river is at perfect level right now [3,430 cfs @ 6 PM on 3/25].

I am planning a paddling trip (no whitewater/ early may) for 4-5 days with paddlers of various skills (canoes/kayaks). I would like to cover a good distance, some lake some river with camping options along the way. I have spent more time in the Adirondacks but thought it would be good to try some in VT. Probably park cars at both ends since there will be at least two cars worth of people. Any ideas?

I am a camp Program Director at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Currently Our summer camping program is looking for an Canoe and Kayak Instructor.
We serve kids ages 9-13 and employment and housing is available from early may to late august. We help provide training for the right individual. (A love and experience in either craft would be helpful as well as some experience with children.

Our facility is also an American Camping Association accredited camp. Other perks related to staff is that camp staff do not live with kids, we only work M-F weekends off, and housing is air conditioned. Also we are within 50 minutes of Virginia Beach.

We have a waterfront that is 1100 square feet on the James River. The River is tidal and a wonderful environment to canoe and kayak and teach others especially kids this wonderful past time and art in recreation.

If you still need a summer job and want to make a difference while making pretty good money (for camp jobs, because I feel we are competitive) please contact our office immediately. at Jamestown 4-H Educational Center at 757-253-4931 or email directly to me Gretchen at ggocheno@vt.edu

Job applications are available directly on our website at: http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/jamestown/employ.html

I hope to hear from some great individuals very soon. Now is the time to get your summer lined up.
