The following was on a New England Flow Coalition flyer distributed at the West River Festival this past weekend, and also posted on the News page at http://www.ZoarOutdoor.com:

>> Army Corps Announces More Possible Fall Releases on the West River

The following is the text of an email circulated by the Army Corps of Engineers regarding more possible releases this fall on the West River which will be rain-dependent. This is in addition to the regularly scheduled releases this weekend.

>> New Opportunities for Whitewater Boating on the West River in October and November, 2000

The New England District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be providing an opportunity for increased white water releases from Ball Mountain Dam during October and November, 2000 on the West River, Jamaica, Vermont. This opportunity will be for a limited time and on a trial basis.

Following a rainstorm event that raises the Ball Mountain Reservoir to a level of at least 50 feet, the Corps will hold the pool for a few days longer than normal and then release the water for a one-day release on Saturday (or possibly Sunday) for whitewater recreation. The target flows are 1500 cfs, but flows may vary with the amount of water available. Boaters should check the Corps’ Web site following a rainstorm to see if weekend paddling is possible. They can also check a phone message at (978) 318-8612 on Friday for any last minute changes. The Ball Mountain Dam operator can also be reached at (802) 874-4881 Monday through Friday between 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Boaters should remember that the recorded message and the Web site are the primary sources of information regarding the status of whitewater releases, and should call the message after 3:00 PM on a Friday for any last minute changes. As always, the primary purpose of Ball Mountain Dam is flood control. Any threat of flooding can lead to canceling and/or modifying whitewater releases.

The river can be reached from the trail over the Ball Mountain Dam and from the bridge or the State Park in Jamaica. Boaters should remain flexible and check for information on the Web and at the above phone numbers. Please be courteous to the staff who are working weekends and give them our thanks.

I have expressed my chagrin about this to the USGS, particularly since this is an extremely popular gauge among New England whitewater enthusiasts. If you want to do the same, visit theUSGS Comment Page (http://bowdnhbow.er.usgs.gov/rt/rt_pg_comment.html)

Hello, I want to get started in white water kayaking and playboating. I am looking for a boat. I was told a dagger outlaw and redline would be good for me. Then someone else told me they would be terrible for me I should get a riot slice or wavesport x, or foreplay.

I am about 5'8 and 155 pounds. Any ideas or boats for sale? Thanks. Samantha

Dear CASKE 2000 friends and followers,

Greetings from Costa Rica!

We have been spending quite a bit of time lately in a town called Ostional on the Pacific coast. It is the nesting spot of the largest population of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles in the Americas. Details and photos forthcoming. Amazing stuff!

Meanwhile, we encourage you to read a story by Luke of his harrowing cannonball run from California to Costa Rica with our new kayaks (shipping was outrageous, so he drove them down) and we direct you to the first photos from Costa Rica of the boats in action.

From the archives, the entire Baja journals and stories pages have been culled and edited down to the best and most exciting tales. Take a look.
More from southern Cost Rica in a couple weeks.

Cheers,
Luke and Jean-Philippe

River flows as of 9:45 AM, Sunday, Nov 12:
- Winooski (Essex); 1,880 cfs, steady
- Lamoille (E. Georgia); 1,750 cfs, rising

Also, the New Haven was running at 195 cfs at 7:15 AM and just starting to drop, but not quickly -- unusual for this river. The Mad's flow was 192 cfs and dropping at 10:30; this is LOW.

At the Mills on the Winooski, the surf wave downstream of the horseshoe hole is starting to appear. It gets really good at ~3,300 cfs. There are also surfing opportunities on the Chace Mill side, above and below the falls. (Of course the water is *COLD*.)

Some NW Vermont river flows, for the record:

-- Winooski/Essex: ** 27,100 cfs ** (near or at crest at 9:45 AM -- stage = 16.74 feet, flood = 15 ft), 27,000 at 1:45 PM
-- New Haven/Brooksville: over 6,000 cfs last night (flood stage is 3,180)
-- Mad/Moretown: peaked at ~5,600 cfs last night
-- Lamoille/E. Georgia: over 9,000 this morning, online graph shows peak of 18,000 last night (??), as of 1:30 PM gauge reads 12,400 cfs - just below flood stage

(Runoff like this is not typical for December.)

A paddlers' FYI:

Im writing to tell you about a new web site called http://ItsBeenStolen.com it is FREE access, and is designed to help reunite people with their identifiable lost or stolen property.

Together with Matt of http://www.marinerkayaks.com I have added in 146 Kayaks which have been reported as lost or stolen.

I hope that you will find this information useful, and pass on details of the website to all of your members, so that anyone loosing a Kayak can enter it into the database, and anyone buying one on the second hand market, can first check to see if it has been reported as stolen.

Merry Christmas

Tenth Annual National River Cleanup Week Scheduled for May 12-19, 2001

Each year, National River Cleanup Week encourages cleanups of local
waterways and promotes the importance of keeping rivers and streams
clean. More than 54,000 volunteers took part in the last cleanup,
June 3-10, 2000. Civic clubs, businesses, paddlesports enthusiasts,
fishing groups, outfitters and conservation groups join together
across the country to organize and execute cleanups of their selected
streams. This stimulates cleanups of blighted areas and helps
communities focus attention on neglected waterways.

America Outdoors, the largest national association of outfitters and
guides is the founder and national sponsor of National River Cleanup
Week. American Rivers is a supporter of National River Cleanup
Week.

Since the beginning of National River Cleanup Week in 1992, 326,735
volunteers have participated in 4,080 cleanups covering 80,458 miles
of shoreline and waterways. Many groups report that their efforts
are paying off with greater awareness and community support occurring
on the local level.

National River Cleanup Week assists local groups with information on
how to conduct a successful river cleanup, how to promote their
event, and provides safety tips. Groups that register their cleanups
may receive free National River Cleanup trash bags for cleanups
occurring during the week of May 12-19, 2001. Trash bags are subject
to availability. Groups that register also receive a packet of
educational materials prior to the cleanup week.

Registration is free and can be submitted online at
http://www.americaoutdoors.org/nrcw/natao10.htm. A video on "How to
Conduct and Organize a River Cleanup," narrated by former CBS News
White House correspondent Bob Pierpoint, is available for $10.95.

For more information please contact the National River Cleanup
Week/America Outdoors office, by phone at 865-558-3595, or email at
rivercleanup@aol.com.

Agency support has been provided by the Bureau of Land Management and
the USDA Forest Service.
