The 38th Annual Athol Lions Club River Rat Race will be run on April 14th. This event is as much a spectacle as it is a race. One of the best and most fun events of the year as 300 boats take a LeMans start down a river about 25 boat widths wide. It is six miles down the swift Millers River between Athol and Orange.

For entry form call 978-249-9038.

And - the Run of the Charles Canoe and Kayak Race in Boston will be happening on April 29th. New England's largest race. Call 1-800-969-RACE or email CRWAROTC@aol.com for more information. Races of 24, 19, 9, and 6 (rec) miles in length.

Thinking it further, the boat I am looking for does not necessarily need to be a wavesport z. I have long legs and big feet, so it needs to be large volume with a loose planing hull. I am told a necky bliss may fit the bill also. There has to be other designs out there too.Surfing ocean waves may be it's primary use.

I have tentatively booked an additional pool rolling session on March 21 at 7:00 pm at the VAC pool in Rutland since several could not make the 2/28 session or were sidelined with colds. Please double check by e mail or Phone (775-4726) if you plan to come since I will cancel if there is no interest. The 3/28 session is still scheduled. Thanks!

looking for a canoe building course in new england area to build a wood strip canoe this spring. Any suggestions? A guy who builds canoes in his garage in vermont would be fine, as long as he doesn't mind an amateur around.

Quebec Summer Trip:I'm looking for a couple of additional paddlers to fill out a canoe trip to central Quebec, August 8-23. We're a group of four (2 men, 2 women), planning 2 weeks - roughly 10 days on the water - in the upper Saguenay River basin, flying-in beyond the timber roads, then canoe-camping our way back. The region is sub-arctic and remote, and the route a range of lake, moving and white water. Experience and a friendly disposition are of course a must. You can reach me at the UVM History Dept (656-4527), at home in Burlington (862-0231), or via email. Thanks,Dave Massell

Trip cancellation - The Lower Lamoille trip scheduled for 3/31 is officially cancelled. The river is still iced over in a big way. Rains and warm(mild) weather in the next couple of days could possibly open it up, however, there could still be dangerous ice ledges, jams, and debris to go along with the 32°F water temp. Better safe than stupid. See you anohter time.....RM

Hey fellow paddlers.
I'm planning a week-long canoe trip for mid-August (01), and I'm seeking suggestions on where to go in Vermont. There will be two novice paddlers/experienced campers and one well-behaved dog in a 16' Old Town Penobscot canoe, so we're looking for either a big, remote lake to explore, or a tame river to float. We're going for serenity here, not gut-busting heart-pounding whitewater action.
Do you have any recommendations for a lake/river that is suitable? We're trying to avoid anyplace that has lots of summer jetskiers/waterskiers and plenty of campsites. We'll be driving from Syracuse, NY, so access suggestions would be helpful as well.
Thanks in advance,
Kenny Daniels

I know this is a really late notice and that most who will read this will find this too far to travel but I was thinking of paddling the Esopus Creek (class III)tomorrow and was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining me. If you are wondering, the Esopus is off exit 19 of the NY thruway about an hour south of Albany. Let me know by my email before 8am tomorrow if you would be interested. thanks.
