The Mad is Rising!!
Middle section is do-able,but, lots of high ice on the sides, the weire dam
is NOT portagable due to high ice on the banks. The take out is not free
yet, ice flows blocking the rocks, plus parking not plowed. Take out could
be on the low road at the base of the rapid by the horse farms.
Lower needs another day,- ice flow is all across by the island below the
Rt100 bridge and double drop is half blocked, the put ins are all still in
2'+ of snow.with parking not plowed..lovers lane is open but it looks
blocked below the big rocks there...

The waves below the dam in Middlebury are kickin' right now. I'm told the waves form at levels over 3 ft. It's at 4.75 now. We were down there last night and had a blast. The play hole isn't accessible at this level, but the wave is good. If anyone ever wants to go play there on weekdays after 3:30, drop me a line. You can check the level at http://bowdnhbow.er.usgs.gov/rt-cgi/gen_stn_pg?station=04282500

Also, I'm new to the area and looking for local paddlers. I'll hopefully be on the water every weekend for the next few months, so if you want to paddle or are willing to show me some area rivers, drop me a line.

It looks like the rumors are true. I have been in contact thru e-mail with sombody from the corps and this is what he told me. Because of the heavey snow pack this year the Windhall Brook camp ground and the Jamaca state park will be closed the the spring release. The release is still going to go off @ 1500cfs on both days but you will need to find other accomadations for the 2 days. I even tried to get in with no services like warm water or even running water. He advised me that it was the mud that was the issue. they don't want vehicles on the roans or grass.

Hello,
My name is Karen Estey and I'm writing to you from the Scuppernong River, Columbia, NC - just an hour from the Outer Banks.
I'm in the process of opening an indoor camping site (one block from the river) in an old building I own, for paddles that would include shared bath with shower, cot, dinner, breakfast and packed lunch.
From our area it's a quick trip to explore the Scuppernong River, The Alligator River, The Albemarle Sound and Lake Phelps.
You just bring a boat and linens.
I hope to have boat rentals by fall.
The rate for meals and lodging is only $22 per night per person.
The building also has a cafe, gym, TV, VCR and sitting area.
While in Columbia visit the Pocosin Art Center and Gallery, Christmas Shop, Gift Shop, Ice Cream Shop, Museum and a 3/4 mile self guided educational river boardwalk.
If you think you would be interested in receiving additional information or if you have any advice or suggestions, please drop me a line at rhouse@williamstonnc.com
Thank You and Have a Great Summer,

Megan,

The North Creek gauge was 5.96 today, with the bubble from the Indian release it should be 6.5 if there is no rain. A good solid medium level, better than the 5-6' range. At 7.3 I used to feel it got class 5ish, big, unpredictable, reactionary curlers that were 20 feet long. Thankfully, it isn't that high.It would be good to be at the put-in by 10, we can see the response we get for car pooling. Be nice to have 2 cars, but the other boaters can help with a shuttle if we only are taking 1 car. The Lower Moose ,Mcgeever gauge would also be a good choice.

Ultimate PADDLER's VEHICLE for sale

You will always have your bathroom and heated changing room with you if you drive the Xplorer 272. This retro vehicle is in good shape and runs great. No problem going up that hill to the take-out at the Yough. The Dodge 440 engine can climb that hill with 10 paddlers and 10 boats towed behind without losing power.

Impress your friends with hot food at the take-out. This motorhome has a full kitchen with double sink, oven, 4 burner stove and a good sized fridge. You will always have cold beer when you get off the river if the Xplorer is your river vehicle.

This 22' home on wheels is just the right size. Plenty of storage inside and out. I hauled out 5 large boxes of stuff when I cleaned it out after a long paddling trip.

New RV's like this go for $30,000. But this isn't new. It is definitely retro, complete with orange shag trim vintage 1978. We put in new carpeting where the shag was no longer shag or orange with durable indoor/outdoor carpet that can be cleaned up with a broom or a quick vacuum.

You can sleep 6 people, but you wouldn't want to do that every night. It is totally self contained and you can live in it, but I wouldn't want to live in it with 5 others. Perfect bachelor pad, for the River Rat on the go. You will really impress the chicks with this love wagon. If you are a family type, you can take the family in comfort, and never have to stop at a rest area again until the driver needs relief. The bathroom can be used in transit! The kids can play cards at the table and help themselves to drinks and food from the fridge.

The exterior is a leakproof and soundproof fiberglass shell.

We loved this vehicle, and if I don't sell it, I won't be too bummed, because it is so reliable and hauls so much stuff, that it would be great to have it for those occasions. But right now, it is super-clean, so we'd like to show and not dirty it up while it is looking so good.

It is complete with paddling stickers we have acquired along the way. They can be removed if you wish.

It is located in upstate NY, but it can be driven to a river if you are seriously interested and do not live nearby.

Lots of new stuff in it and lots of maintenance repairs, everything works and it is ready to roll to the river. New electrical system, batteries, tires and other stuff.

We are asking $5000.

Email sheller3@twcny.rr.com

Serious inquiries only. I can send you a picture.

Some last minute West River weekend information from the Corps of Engineers website --

Some of this is worth drawing special attention to (see text in all caps). I assume this is being done because the dam's pool stage is much higher than normal, and the Corps wants to draw it down as fast as possible to recover reserve capacity for further snowmelt and May-June rains (if we get some!):

Due to the late season snow in the parks the Corps' Winhall Brook Campground and Jamaica State Park will be closed for the white water release weekend of April 28 and 29. In spite of this, the Ball Mountain Lake release will take place as scheduled. Winhall campground will open as soon as conditions permit. There will also be a white water release during the week end of May 5 and 6. This release was made possible due to the high reservoir levels that have resulted from flood control operations. Please be advised that during the hours preceding and following the scheduled events the FLOWS FROM BALL MOUNTAIN DAM ARE LIKELY TO BE MUCH HIGHER THAN 1500 CFS which could make the river more hazardous for boaters. Releases from Townshend Dam will likely be much higher than 1500 cfs for the entire duration of both weekends, including the scheduled event times.
[from http://www.nae.usace.army.mil/waterres/htdocs/htmlfiles/recreation.html]

In other words, the river could be running substantially higher than 1,500 cfs for those who come early (before 8:30 AM) or stay late (after 4:30 PM), versus the recreational releases of recent years, in which the flow dropped off sharply at those times. Skilled diehards will probably say "cool!", but the rest of us who show up this weekend should take some care.

Playboaters: Does anyone know if the Hartland waves can be too high? The release phone doesn't give a level, just "unstable water levels" this weekend.

If anyone's interested, this weekend we're going to paddle wave-o-saurus (Holyoke, MA; really fun last weekend), the Hartland waves, and/or parts of the Mad River. Home number: 877-6961.

Water levels have been good and avid boaters have been out in force. Just a remnder: PLEASE THINK SAFETY! Friday 20 April there was a tragic death on the Middlebury River in the Middlebury Gorge in a group of truly expert boaters. Saturday 21 a group that likely overrated their own ability/misjudged the water level had what was a carnage run on the New Haven Ledges and had one member suffer a back injury that could just as easily have been a permanently crippling spinal cord injury. Either Fri 20 or Sat 21 a not very expert group of college students was actually filmed by a TV crew getting trashed on the Mad River in the Mooretown Gorge and was seen on the WPTZ 11pm news. (A Friend from Montréal called to tease about Vermont boating skills.)Please have gear that is in good repair. Have a throwrope in your boat or on your person and know how to use it. Take it out and practice with it. Have a breakdown paddle in the group. Have a first aid kit in the group. If you are creeking have a folding saw, extra carribeaners, pulleys, webbing and other appropriate rescue gear in the group. The water is cold, dress for a swim--no matter how good that you think that you are; no matter how long ago it was that you last swam. Paddle with people that you know and trust. Scout. And have fun. If you are getting nervous and no longer having fun on the river it could well be a clue that the water is too high or that you are getting beyond your ability. Do not be afraid to walk a drop or to just take off the river and live to boat another day.SYOTRTom

Brand new to Vermont and looking to make some paddling friends up here. Available today (Sat. 28), Sunday. Have a lot to learn, just started in a hybrid last year so anything more than class 3 for now and I wouldnt feel to comfy. My wet exit is fine, I have the gear I need for the water temp and I promise not to be a liability! Been in a canoe for over 20 years and know how to read a river, just need pointers and practice practice practice. My number is 802-288-1084. A little quiet water would be great too, I have no clue where to put in, take out, ect.. Any takers? You name the spot and time, I will find it. Mike

A group "of truly expert boaters" still leaves someone dead. I can't make a judgement because I wasn't there. It's tragic when someone dies on the river but that's the nature of the game. All the scouting and throw bags in the world won't help sometimes. Blow your line, miss a boof, hit the rock you didn't see and that's all it takes to make a tragedy, but more often than not, a bad swim or a lost piece of equipment is all that happens. What we need is more people like Tom Yurista to make the judgements for us. He could do it all second hand with no real knowledge of particular situations. Everyone can send people like him their paddling resumes and he can send back a list of rivers and the levels that would be appropriate for you. I'm sure with just such a system we would not have to worry about any further injuries on the rivers. Whatever, I can just see Tom and his 10 carabinners, ACA "badges of courage" sewn on his highfloat life vest loading half his garage into his boat. Lets not forget "expert" is an ego label. Get out there and paddle hard.

I felt it might be appropriate for a club member to respond that had paddled the New Haven River trip mentioned in Dr. Tom Yurista's comments on boater safty and good decision making. I share the somberness of many of you that have experienced the ugly face of injury in your own paddleing groups. In my return to Vermont's streams in a single season i have seen facial cuts and the spinal injury listed in Dr. Yurista's message. After work on Saturday the 21'st I was driving home to Lincoln when i recognised a group of 3 paddlers, 1 of which i knew. The leader and i had paddled the Little river the previous year during a moderate release. I requested to join the group and shared with them that i had never paddled the New Haven Ledges. I have paddled continuous class 4 and some class 5 rapids on western rivers. One of my largest concerns prior to the put in was the shape of my boat. I was paddleing a wave sport big EZ. I asked the leader if he thought the boat would be OK. The leader told me that i could scout what i wanted and we all would walk the rapid that had a large strainer in it. He shared his experience of paddling that section no less than 450 times. I assumed his qualification of the other paddlers in his party as they were formed prior to my arrival.
Based on a conversation in an eddy with the injured i felt comfortable entering the flow. I found he was a strong paddler with exceptional boof ability.
We descended upon the first rapid which felt more like falling through the chute in a Hay mow than much of what i had seen on a river. I was exhillerated, scared, and energized. The bouncing contact as the bow dropped into the fall line was a new feeling. It was my small boat introduction to creeking. It was at the end of this first rapid that friend of the injured lost one of his contact lenses. His depth perception was impared, his rhythem was knocked off, and had it been me in his position my monkey mind would have been screaming a hellatious "you will die". Needless to say it was a few rapids after that he parted from one of his booties, pinned his paddle in a strainer and sent his boat down stream. I assesed the situation while he was swimming and saw that our leader and the injured would be in better position to help the swimmer. Understand, this is one of three times in the eight years i have been paddling that i passed up a swimmer. I felt i couldn't deal with the consequences of carrying him into the next rapid. Leader and injured got him to shore and we paused to discuss the boat rescue and collect our thoughts.
This would have been the point of the trip for me to make a judgement call on the rest of the river. You must understand, until that point i thought i was out gunned by power, skill, roll ability and river rescue technique by leader, injured and swimmer. The adrenaline rush singing "see the tounges not the rocks" and my own search for quiet mind prevented me from the overt question: is this really a good idea and a safe river for me to paddle. I wanted to push for new ground and a single swimmer during the trip reminded me of the corn fed freshers that showed up at roll sessions thinking their own rolls would float them. It was above the ledge of Bartlet falls know to paddlers as Toaster that i pushed hardest for the quiet mind. Leader asked me if i wanted to scout it and my reply: "If i look at it, i probably won't run it."
Leader said that based on the increase in the flow of the river from the 2.5 foot level that we put in on we should have a scout that had a throw bag on the top left edge. Injured voluntered to act as rescue while leader ran the rapid with a clean drop. Thumbs up came back to me and i peeled out centering on the point that leader went. I traced his line and stalled a bit as i hit the rock lip and plunged bow first in a un identifyable munching mass of foam, exploding wave and dynamic funny water.
When my glasses hung infront of my face the from the inpact of the wave i took my right hand off my paddle to place them back on my head. Upsidedown i was comming in contact with a shelf on river left. I centered back on the paddle and popped my roll only to find i was floating in the green water safely out of the hole. The mist filled the gorge and made vision difficult even 25 feet downstream of the hole. Leader said that toaster was juicy today, and we agreed that she was big. The injured received thumbs up from me and left to enter his boat. The next frame i saw was somthing out of a Warren Miller film. Injured was paddling way hard, he accelerated to the lip digging in with every bit of his soul. When is final blade left the water his bow was up and he was airborn. He glided out of reach of the hole below only to find that he was to land out of the drop zone, in shallow water, on an unforgiving ledge. The bone craking smack sounded off the ledge walls as he uddered in muffled breath that he was hurt.
He repeated: "I am really hurt." He floated down the edge of the eddy to leader and leader assisted him to the slick ledge shore on river left. He was able to remove himself from his cockpit and stand when the pain hit dropping him belly down like a roast pig on his bow. He paused to collect his breath and leader did a damage assesment. Injured ferried river right under his own power to the road way where swimmer and a helpfull club member assisted him into a truck.
All of the mental errors of the day could not forgive what was to happen next. I let a probable spinal injury go away in the front seat of a pickup truck. I have been trained as a lifeguard and am currently certified for cpr. Injured should have ridden to Burlington with the rescue squad.
I assume personal responsibilty for my own actions that day as did each of the paddlers that i was with. Being a part of the group, making mental errors, acting quickly instead of responsibly i let the club down. What we must realize is that Dr. Yurista's goals for safty and good decision making are not based on some pious holyer than thou additude of ability. Dr Yurista has seen the results of bad decisions first hand. It is his job.
One of past years paddling back injuries was leaning against his car at the edge of the road when the injured was waiting for transport. He pulled out a bottle of ibuprofen handed the injured six. He said " i wouldn't take more than twelve of those in a day." I wondered how many it would take to forget about paddleing for the year.
Take heed paddlers bad decisions don't make hero's, they generate injury. Prolong your paddle by playing safe.

See you on the river.
