Responce to Joe's posting: I wasn't there either and never meant my message to be be river police action. It was a reminder to the boating community that we all should be 1) aware that we don't paddle in a vacuum and that mishaps of one boating group, whether accidents or errors in judgement affect other paddler's use of the rivers and the reputation of the paddling community in general, 2) a reminder to keep safety first because paddling is potentially dangerous and it doesn't hurt to remember that it our frenzy to catch the snowmelt, 3) a list of safety gear suggestions given to us by Dennis Carrigan who taught the safety course put on by VPC a couple of years ago to give people a place to start. I find it interesting that you have taken offense to the posting. Many people have taken offense to my use of "truly expert." Perhaps that was a poor term, but the paddlers involved each paddle 100-200 days per year, much of that on class VI and class V water. They are in excellent physical condition (two of them collegiate cross country ski racers). Very few of us can say that. Very few of us are expert paddlers, no matter how much our egos want us to be. I do not consider myself to be an expert paddler. I'm sorry that I offended you. SYOTR Tom

A few years ago when AW magazine had one of its multiple article features about a beloved member of the paddling community who had died tragically, one of the writers wrote something akin to: good judgement comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgement. Everyone who paddles whitewater knows how true that is--thankfully, most of the time its part of the fun and makes for great stories. Whitewater is awesome. The New Haven is awesome, and because the entire run is roadside it is a great place to start to do some creeking because everything can be scouted easily, can be run safely, and everything can be walked. It is still class III/VI/V, however, and should never be taken lightly at any water level. Paddle safe.

I would like to catch it after work, or this weekend, at one foot. What is the level now? Anyone venture to predict its rise and fall over the next few days??

As part of the group of "not very expert" paddlers who got "trashed" on the Mad River last sunday, I must agree with most of Tom's message. The river on that day was incredibly high and the current was fierce, but after scouting I decided it didn't look exceptionally dangerous, nor beyond my ability. I didn't know the other two paddlers. I had met them earlier that day at the New Haven ledges (which they had paddled several times before but which we all decided was a little too at that level), so I assumed they would be a competent group. The run (below the cemetary in Mooretown) turned out to be a bit much, with the first paddler rolling several times in the first 100 yard strech and the seccond paddler swimming. I survived, but definitely was helped by seeing how difficult the run was for the first two. The swimmer quickly caught an eddy and was fine, and we others were able to rescue his boat.

What annoied me were the comments made for the TV crew afterwards. Swimmer: "I was backwards, upside down, had no idea where I was, no idea what I was heading for..." Reporter: "Would you do it again?" Swimmer: "Umm...yeah, definitely." (perhaps he would have, had he not lost his paddle.)

We underestimated the river that day, suffered a lost paddle and caused Tom some grief from his Montreal friends (sorry). As the messages from the past few days point out, consequences can be much more severe. I don't like to preach, but whatever it is you do, weigh the consequences with the risks, and be prepared to accept and deal with those consequences.

And try not to be an idiot.

It's called trolling, and it seems to work. VPC's message board is a little too white bread boring, buy my RV, dream house, or that red Dancer I have in my basement. Some quality issues have been discussed in the past few days and I feel that is a good thing. Writing on these message boards should cause the readers to think and want to express their opinions. I may have it wrong, but right at the top of this page it says rant/rave. Sorry I chose to pick on Dr. Tom but he was the one throwing around the second hand assumptions about groups of paddlers this past week. I agree with most everything he has posted. I don't paddle without a throw bag in my boat, nor do I paddle in bare feet in case I have to get out on shore and move fast. I believe we all need to make our own decisions as to what we do on the water. The number of kayaking deaths and injuries is going to go up as the number of participants increases. There is no way around that. The general public dosen't care if we kill ourselves on the rivers(landowners are a different story) they just don't want to see us naked on the side of the road before or after we paddle. Use your brains kids, walk it if you don't feel right, run it if you feel good, but be willing to accept the consequences for screwing up. Paddle hard.

Place your praise on the beauty of the activity you participate in. Life is an amazing thing--don't trivialize the mystery of any adventure or hide from those who embrace them at a different level than you. The bottom line is--consequences are things we can accept, ignorance is much harder. The problem with all of these message boards is the snowballing effects of "interesting information." Rivers are powerful pathways. You can learn a lot from such mediums as this page, but truly understanding and accepting the river experience is a life skill, fueled by paddling skill, not the reverse. Have fun learning, but don't question the ability or intentions of others who might set their sights a level higher than your own. If you do this, then you have to ask yourself what exactly you are trying to achieve. "Be bold enough to be small enough to let the world be awesome." Jim Snyder. Always question yourself first--and don't try and rationalize a tragedy with myopic crutches. Thank you for your concerns as to river safety and have fun doing whatever it is that you love. Kudos to Tom for reminding all of us to pay attention. It is NEVER inappropriate to raise safety as an important thing to consider in a public forum such as this board. Joe, I found your comments unhelpful, spiteful, misguided and inappropriate given the circumstances. As anyone who knows Tom, or who actually read his post carefully, is aware, he is neither condescending nor egotistical in his appraoch to paddling and paddlers. He is moreover a valuable resource, and this club is priveleged to have him as a member. I appreciate his efforts, and join with those who have posted in support of his message. I am never one to discourage open and honest dialogue, and as such I applaud your frankness, Joe. I only wish that your thoughts were more carefully considered. I am a relative novice in whitewater, yet I recognize the importance of being prepared, knowing your limits and walking when you are not sure. These are qualities I have learned from paddling with people like Tom, and I feel that they will eventually allow me to be a better paddler. While I disagree with your post, Joe, I hope that you will not be discouraged from taking part in the dialogue on this board in the future. I agree that it is always good to make people think, I think though that you could have achieved that goal in a more useful and respectful manner. Thanks also to Eric L. for sharing his experience with us. It takes guts to put one's mistakes out there like that, but I am sure we can all learn from it. SYOTR Jason

For those who will be spending time outdoors in the next week (and maybe beyond):

...SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT 612 PM EDT THU MAY 3 2001
...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER CONTINUES ACROSS THE NORTH COUNTRY...

IT HAS BEEN EXTREMELY DRY ACROSS THE NORTH COUNTRY WITH RAINFALL AMOUNTS GENERALLY UNDER ONE HALF INCH SINCE EARLY APRIL. THIS LONG TERM DRYNESS COUPLED WITH THE UNSEASONABLY WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS AND VERY LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES HAS RESULTED IN A VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER ACROSS ALL OF VERMONT AND NORTHERN NEW YORK.

THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS BRUSH AND WILDLAND FIRES ACROSS THE REGION IN RECENT DAYS. THE NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION HAS ISSUED A BURN BAN FOR THE ENTIRE STATE OF NEW YORK. IN VERMONT...MANY TOWN FOREST WARDENS HAVE STOPPED ISSUING BURNING PERMITS. THE STATE MAY CONSIDER ISSUING A STATEWIDE BURNING BAN IF CONDITIONS DO NOT IMPROVE.

THERE IS A CHANCE OF SHOWERS FRIDAY AND FRIDAY EVENING AS A COLD FRONT DROPS SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION. HOWEVER...SIGNIFICANT WIDESPREAD RAINFALL IS NOT EXPECTED. DRY CONDITIONS WILL RETURN FOR THE WEEKEND AND CONTINUE INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED FOR ANY OUTDOOR FIRES INCLUDING COOKOUTS DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS. MATCHES AND SMOKING ARE A MAJOR CAUSE OF BRUSH...GRASS AND FOREST FIRES....

What a great thread started by Tom. As we are all aware of the dangers in river running it does make sense to be equiped with the right gear. I am not an expert boater and probably never will be. I do carry the rope, pullys, biners and first aid kit with me. Fortunatly I have never had to use anything but the rope.
If you are a novice boater, what is difficult to you? Class II ? If you are an expert what is difficult? Regardless of you ability the dangers are the same. Make a mistake and the results could be the same. I often paddle with my son and his friends who are all about 14 years old. They all think they are invincable. Ego's? Thats not the only thing that they thing is big. Nothing looks to hard for them. As I all ways tell them, all drops can be run. The difference between a novice and an expert is how they react if something goes wrong. That reaction time is trimed down to less than a minute if you are pinned upside down under a rock. One thing they have learned is when they are on the water, listen to the people around them. When they are on shore , well thats a whole nother story. I have been paddling for 5 years. I dont have a combat roll. I concider myself a proficiant paddler. I have a good brace and river reading skills. I can run Class IV but I'm most at home in III. I have run the Lower Mad at 1200 cfs and the top of Ridley. The North branch of the Lamoille I have run at high levels. Does this put me in the same class as the Moretown boaters? Saftey is always first. My boys and myself don't care what other people think when we walk a rapid. Why take to great of a chance, the river might be better tomarrow and we want to be there.

I think most of the people you see on the river today have some common sense about their ability. There are exceptions. Rafting the otter creek at midnight on a home made raft is on the fringe. The boater in Middlebury probably was comfotable running the river. Something happend and he ran out of time.
So Tom, good advice. Joe, very well said.
There's my 2 cents!!

Rivers are now dropping steadily; the snowmelt has mostly run its course, at least in northern Vermont, and normal rainfall hasn't yet returned. If you're looking for something to do, the Winooski between Burlington and Winooski (ie, between the two mills) is now running at a comfortable level of ~3,500 cfs for those with solid class 3 skills (including a *reliable* roll). It offers some good surfing opportunities at this level -- especially a very nice wave opposite the Waterworks restaurant atrium. (You'll have an audience! Don't swim...) Try it while it's good.

The top of the rapids can be accessed from the easternmost parking lots of the Champlain and Chace Mills. The Chace Mill lot is the unpaved one behind the power substation. It is owned by Green Mountain Power, which does not object to its use for this purpose, as long as paddlers assume the risks.

[This location is mentioned on the VPC trip schedule. As always, please don't paddle these rapids alone! Also bear in mind that the Winooski One Dam is a few hundred yards downstream of the two mills.]

I am so glad that you read this message board. Well, the rivers are dropping but that wave is still kickin'! I went out last night and paddled in the full moon, it was so sweet. Have you ever paddled at night? Anyway, I got this one ariel cartwheel that you would not believe. I boofed the rock on river right pulled a fakie and I was airborne! You have to try that.
So you think the paddle with the supertight edge will make the difference? You were spanking me with that paddle. It must be the way that the current reacts when it hits the radical high back that gets you those moves.
Naked moonlight paddling on the wave tonight hope to see you there!

Update on the Winooski @ Chace Mill: The river is now down to 1,970 cfs (as of 1:45 PM today) and is being strongly affected by manipulations of the flow by upstream dams. By this weekend it should be at something close to typical mid-summer levels -- a sobering thought considering that we're still in the first half of May. The nice wave I mentioned previously disappeared on Tuesday afternoon. We won't see it again until we get a good soaking rain over a wide area of northern Vermont. Nonetheless there is still stuff to do at the Mill -- some other waves, a nice splat rock, a playable hole or two. (The horseshoe hole is still too big to really play in.) The Chace Mill side of the falls still has enough water to be runnable. The water temperature is close to 60 degrees F -- maybe warmer.

[There are paddlers out there now; come on down!]

******************************************

April 9, 2001 (Washington, DC): President Bush is proposing a 40% cut in the USGS streamgaging budget for fiscal year 2002. This is twice as bad as even the most pessimistic predictions.

My letter of opposition (see below) can serve as a sample, if you agree with the sentiments. Send one like it (or simply copy and paste mine) to your congressional delegation! The www address is http://www.americanwhitewater.org/archive/article/172/

May 13, 2001

Dear [recipient name was inserted here],

Alarming news has come my way, that resident Bush has recommended a staggering cutback in funding for the USGS real-time stream gage program. This is bad news, not only for recreational users of Vermont streams and rivers like myself, but also for those whose homes and businesses may be threatened by rapidly rising river levels, and for industries like hydro power producers who may use USGS data to predict and maximize their power generating capabilities throughout the year.

The USGS has done an absolutely PHENOMENAL job with their state of the art stream level monitoring system. It embodies the best of what the WWW has to offer, permitting public safety officials, business people, and the general public to observe stream level fluctuations in real time without ever leaving their desk or home. Please do not let the Bush administration diminish this tremendous and necessary USGS activity.

Sincerely,
Anthony Shaw

Does anyone have an old w/w kayak paddle they can lend me for a little while while I'm waiting for an order to come in? I busted my current paddle last Thursday on the Winooski so I am temporarily a flat water (touring boat) paddler only. [I had been using a Mitchell Rover, 60 degree right feather, 198 cm.]

I promise not to break it!

Hi. Is it true that your club sponsors or does an annual circumvention of Manhattan, New York? A friend and I are interested in doing so and would like to converse with a person of experience. We are hoping to do this in late June.

Can anyone reccommend an easy overnight kayak trip for me and my 13 year old daughter? We are novices, and have two Sporty plastic kayaks, We're not looking for high adventure here. We'd like to spend the night in a bed and breakfast. Soft, eh? Its a birthday treat. Maybe there is another website we should be looking at? Thanks.

In response to Joe Bromka's message, yes, we are in The Forks this weekend. For the Dead 1800 Saturday, meet at Webb's at 8:00-8:30 for headcount and shuttle setup. Although they are not official club trips, I also intend to run the Dead again at 5500 Sunday and the Kennebec Monday. I will not be checking email between tonight and this weekend, but anyone can seek me out once there. I have a purple Pyranha and yellow/orange Schlegel.
