***WARNING TO PADDLERS OF THE LOWER LAMOILLE***
In an effort to keep people from accessing the river at the rte. 104 bridge in Fairfax, the person who just built a new house on the hill dumped several pounds of nails in the parking space behind the guardrails. With some help, I removed most of them, however there may be some still there, or worse yet, the person who did this may resort to doing this again or worse.
I am not sure of the legal status of this area. It is within 20 feet or so of the state highway, but I have no idea if that gives us the right to park there. Does anyone know the law on this?
Be careful where you park!

Chace/Champlain Mill update (Winooski R) --

As of 9:45 AM the river is running at 2,940 cfs. The green surf wave downstream of the horseshoe falls isn't really there yet, but the flow is still rising. The wave should appear at 3,100 - 3,200, and should be pretty good at 3,300 - 3,400 (knock on wood). I'll keep an eye on it.

I will be spending a week in Vermont in early July. I would like to do some kayaking or canoeing while I'm there and wondered if someone could suggest the best locations. I'm looking for fairly placid paddling with abundant natural scenery, although moderate white-water might be fun, too. I'd prefer natural waterways rather than dammed reservoirs.

Thanks for any assistance.

The Poultney R. trip on 6/16 went well. Online gauge read 3.5 and this should be considered the minimum level for this stretch between Rte 4 bridge and Carver Falls Dam. Four big drops, another 3 or 4 smaller ones and a few small rapids. Had considerable trouble with landowners at the put-in on the New York side. Stay on the Vermont side, park at the Welcome center and get on the river and go. This would be a challenge at a higher level.

Regarding the put-in for the Lower Lamoille in Fairfax....We have been parking at the store in the old white church across the bridge and walking across. While I am not sure of the law on this exactly in Vermont, I feel that if we want to address the issue of access with the land owner it would behoove us not to park there when they have made such an obvious statement. The walk across the bridge is short and easy, and to date the store has been amenable to our use of their lot. We usually park at the back of the lot and almost always buy a snack or drink. Regardless of whether or not we have a legal right of access, it won't hurt to try and maintain relationships with land owners. This may be an access issue we can address with the owner as a club, provided we demonstrate respectful use.

Regarding access to the Lamoille in Fairfax. I am not sure about the legal issues either (I am trying to find out however), but I was nearly booted out of there one time last year by the "home owner" (actually the realtor that bought the land and is developing it). I was very polite and he let us park as long as "we didn't throw garbage around...". I think that throwing nails around (isn't this littering)and dumping rock in the area on what is probably (hey I'm checking) not even his land is a bit unreasonable. Parking at the store doesn't really fix the problem, but it may avoid flat tires.

After I speak with the State I will post what I find out.

Bring a sandwich and a drink, as we will stop halfway down for dinner "on the rocks".
Meet at Volunteers Park on Bridge St. in Richmond at 5:30 PM to arrange the shuttle. We will put-in around 6 PM from the Jonesville/Duxbury Rd, and be off the river by 7:30 or so.
Please call 879-1655 or email BOATFUL@aol.com Monday (or Tues AM) to confirm, so I can anticipate our shuttle needs. Thanks!

The USGS has revamped their online water resources data system, known as NWISWeb. It can be accessed from the USGS website (www.USGS.gov) by following the 'Real-Time Water Data' link and finding your way to your new NWISWeb system pages. The Vermont gauges are accessible from http://water.usgs.gov/vt/nwis/rt.

NWISWeb is really slick! There is a lot of data available, and it is very nicely organized. I noticed in particular that one can generate a graph that covers more (or less) than the default interval of 7 days. The popup "infotips" provided as part of the image map for the outline of Vermont (the GIF image) are very cool, and make it easy and quick to browse the streamflows for multiple stations within the state. (The actual graphs linked to the map seem to be somewhat more current.) This feature is great for casual browsing as well as for data junkies.

This is a great update. The USGS deserves a lot of credit, knowing the funding constraints to which they are being subjected. (Their water resources programs are suffering a $44 million budget cut for FY 2002.)

For Sale Epitike kids kayak, sprayskirt for boat, and front and rear floatation-$350.
This is a kayak designed for small kids- I had my son in it at age 5, now he's 10 1/2 and moving on to a bigger boat. It is a slalom type of design, 9 feet long, tracks well, plastic, color red, excellent shape.

It is a great boat for flatwater. Also have done mild whitewater, but at this age my goal was to get him comfortable with being in a boat and avoiding scary experiences. Mostly we used it on lakes and little inlets to lakes, when I was in my sea kayak.

If you email me I will send you a picture.
