The Lamoille is way up as of this morning -- if one can believe the online gauge, which showed 3,200 cfs (and still rising a bit) at 9:45 AM.

I heard *unconfirmed* word that the 9/22-9/23 West releases are cancelled due to lack of water impounded behind Ball Mountain Dam. Can anyone confirm or deny this? It is, after all, in Vermont.

Winooski River Clean-Up
2001
Through the UVM Kayak and Canoe Club

We will be meeting at the Chace Mill parking lot at 10:00 am for the clean-up. I ask that everyone park at the "boaters" parking lot which is the unpaved lot furthest upstream, or to the right, when looking at the river from the Chace Mill. Doughnuts will be provided and boats will be there to be used. Kayakers, by nature, are lazy people, therefore we will be taking the occasional break to play in the river that we are cleaning. I will supply garbage bags and things of that sort. You might want to bring gloves if you have any because some of the stuff there is rank. I will try to snag a box of gloves from the chem lab this week.
So be there at 10:00 am... We will be there until 2:00 pm so if you can't come right away no problem. Ok, hope to see everyone there. If you need a ride, post something on the listserv at catayak@list.uvm.edu ... If you want to talk to me, for some off reason, e-mail cringenb@zoo.uvm.edu

Selling a racing canoe
Info: It's called the "17' C-1"
(sometimes suffixed with "Flatwater"). It is a solo, flatwater-competition canoe designed by Gene Jensen. 295 were built between 1979 and 1984. This was made in 1984. The canoe is in good to fair shape, very fast! The canoe is located in Burlington, Vermont! Email me with any questions. Price is very resonable! I have pictures that i send over email for those who are intrested!
Cheers,
Paul

*** WEST RELEASE CUTBACK DUE TO LOW FLOW ***

..from the NE Corps of Engineers whitewater releases page:

Due to low flow conditions the West River white water release scheduled for this weekend has been changed to a one day event. Ball Mountain Dam will be releasing approximately 1,200 cfs on Saturday September 22 from 10:00 am untill 2:00 pm. If water storage allows the release will continue until 3:00 pm. This same flow will be passed through Townsend Dam. Paddlers will be able to access the river below Ball Mountain Dam both through Jamacia State Park or over the dam via the West River trail. Parking will be available in the spillway channel at Ball Mountain Dam. Please check back on Friday for changing conditions.

For those who paddle or would like to paddle at the Chace Mill rapid on the Winooski:

Some of you may have discovered this past week that the Chace Mill has installed a chain gate at the entrance to the east unpaved parking lot (by the GMP substation). Please be aware that this was *NOT* done to deter kayakers from accessing the river from the put-in behind this parking lot. The gate was installed by the Mill's management at the request of residents in the adjoining neighborhood, who were being bothered by loud partying and certain illicit activities that were taking place in the lot after dark, generally after 10 PM.
Admittedly this gate is an inconvenience to paddlers during weekday evenings after 6:30 PM and on weekends. Use of the adjoining east paved parking lot should be acceptable after 5 PM on weekdays and on weekends. The restricted access is a potential problem for a Mill tenant, Yoga Vermont, that schedules yoga classes at night and on weekends. Some additional accommodation of YVT's needs may be made in the future; this should also be helpful to paddlers.
I'll post further information on this subject as it becomes available. (Note: I work in the Chace Mill and know the building's facilities manager, whose name is Dick Belrose.)

From the Corps of Engineers w/w recreation page:

"The Scheduled White Water Releases from our Dams have concluded for this current year. A new schedule will be available for next year sometime in February/March 2002."

I guess there won't be any October release on the West.

I've got a Norse Canoe Paddle I'm selling. It's 57" long with a heavy duty aluminum shaft (narrow diameter). The blades are Kevlar reinforced fiberglass with an aluminum tip. This is one tough stick! I'm selling it because, I now use a shorter length paddle. This paddle retails for around $100. Make an offer.
