TO: All US Citizens and those with US work permitsFROM: Worst-Case Scenario Casting DATE: 10/8/01RE: "Face Off" Casting ______________________________________URGENT!! Please post or forward this to friends!!Casting new TV Show!! Looking for adventurous, outgoing, McGuyver athletes!Avoca Productions and Columbia TriStar Television Distribution are seeking highly skilled competitors for the new TBS Superstation show Worst-Case Scenario. The weekly, hour-long show will feature expert demonstrations, the latest technology, and real life stories of survival. Our goal is to provide our audience with the information they’ll need to overcome any crisis under any circumstances. The segment we are currently casting is called the "Worst-Case Scenario Face Off." Each week, the "Face Off" will travel to a new location. These may include the vast forests of Colorado, the painted desert of Southern Arizona, or the steamy jungles of Costa Rica. There, two highly skilled extreme sports athletes and/or wilderness survival specialists of equal caliber will compete in an adventure-style race that utilizes the challenging features of the local environment. Along the way, the competitors must complete a series of tasks that test their ingenuity and adaptability. For example, a racer may be asked to start a fire using only a nine-volt battery and a steel wool pad. Of course, there is also the option of using a lighter, but unfortunately it’s located a mile away. Will you be able to think outside the box and use the unconventional equipment you have on hand or will you make a run for it and hope you can catch up with your opponent? At the moment we are putting together a pool of competitors that have the physical and mental skill required to take on the "Face Off" challenge. While the race itself will only last for 1-2 days, each racer must be able to dedicate an additional 2-3 days for travel and pre-production. In addition to providing for all expenses on the shoot, we will pay each competitor an appearance fee of approximately $450. If you are interested please call us ASAP and plan to send us the following immediately: 1) A photo with your name, age, phone #, address and organization written on the back. 2) A 2 minute video including your name, age, occupation, why you want to do our show, your area of expertise and specific skills (i.e. Mountain climbing, kayaking, trekking, ski patrol, wilderness EMT), why you consider yourself resourceful (i.e. Mcguyver type), how long you’ve been involved with wilderness survival and/or outdoor activities, why you’re passionate about what you do, and the biggest survival challenge you’ve faced. It is all about personality! Make sure you have lots of energy and enthusiasm! 3) Typed resumeWe would like to have this information immediately. If you are truly interested or know someone who is please call us and we can provide a fed-ex #. Mailing address: Worst-Case Scenario Attn: "Face Off" Casting 2800 28th Street Suite 222 Santa Monica, CA 90405 If you have already sent us a video or have been contacted, thank you and please pass this information on to anyone else who might be interested! I'm trying to find out if anyone has any information or pictures of the rapid river in nh at say above 5000 cfs. I taught kayaking up there one summer and it was one of the rainiest seasons in history. the rapid was a river we frequently ran and at one point during that summer it peaked at over 5000, but we didn't get a chance to see it let alone paddle it. I was wondering what that awesome play hole does at higher water and the nature of it when it gets that big. It was a hoot at 2500 and I would think at 5000 it would be world class. any information would be great.

Now that farming season is over (and before skiing really takes off) I would like to take a moment to reply to a few postings re: an Apr 21st trip on the "new haven ledges".
Unfortunately a paddler from northern vermont sustained a spinal cord injury on this trip.
From what I have read it could be assumed that "leader" (myself), organized a trip party of in/under experienced boaters to run the NH on a higher water day.
I would like to say regarding this, that I was going to enjoy a sunny spring morning of boating that day regardless of the others, and that it was their personal decision to paddle this river/day or not.
Also, in eric's account of that day the level at time of put in was noted at 2.5 feet. It is very important to note that this was the level at the time of take out, and that at time of put it the level was a more reasonable 18". A level I've come to know as padded but not mean yet.
Yet is obviously a key word in this case.
A hot sunny day, a deep snow pack, and the ground already being saturated were all factors that led to one of the more rapid rises in level I had seen in 5 years of boating the New Haven. For those of you familiar with this run, imagine a 15"+ rise in the time it takes to get down to toaster from the put in.
I think this should be a key note to y'all.
Often, rapid rises are associated with hard rain and subsequent "flash floods". I certainly was reminded that this is not always the case.
I agree with Tom's comments on safety,but wish he had opened his phonebook and given me a call to get the whole story as opposed to assuming the standard "not so expert paddlers" line.
My mother used to say that when you assume
you make an ASS out of U and ME.
Having run multiple class V remote creeks with Tom, I know he's not an ass. I trust his judgement and value his opinion. Nor do I feel that I was an ass that day.
There are important lessons to be learned from that day, and from the postings that followed.
Finally, I 'd like to stress to folks who run toaster that just because it's a flatwater entry and finish, it is not an inconsequential drop, especially at higher flows when a large double hole develops and the possibility of getting pushed left beyond the clean landing zone increases.
I hope everyone is doing well, and would love to get a few runs in before I head to BC on the 18th. In case ya lost it my # is 496 8980.
ps - MRG is skiing great from easy way up!! get out your skins and I'll see you up there. Quacky turns!!

I don't know if anyone is still interested in paddling this late in the season but the Sacandaga is still running every day between 10am and 4pm when the dam releases. I am considering paddling this weekend sometime if anyone else is interested. It is a class 2/3 river in NY by Glens falls. It is only 3 miles long with two 1 mile rapids on it. However, on the first rapid there is a great surfing wave that one can play on forever just about. Anyway, I am not sure if I am going but if anyone is interested just let me know and we will see about working something out. Last fun for the season perhaps.

Hello Fellow Paddlers!

As the temperatures begin to drop and the snow begins to fly, we have the time to look back on the experiences of another paddling season, and remember the special places we have traveled through. The waters we enjoy give us much: places to meet with old and new friends for adventures, space to enjoy solitude and to reflect, a source of renewal, and an unmatched opportunity to learn about ourselves. With all this in mind, I would like to tell you about an opportunity to do something lasting for Vermont’s special waterways.
The Vermont River Conservancy works to protect Vermont’s exceptional water-related resources, and is in need of the input of the paddling community in developing future conservation projects. The Vermont River Conservancy is a 501(c) (3) organization which has been working since 1996 “to ensure that Vermont’s precious waterfalls and gorges, swimming holes, fishing and paddling areas - all the outstanding properties along our waters - are protected in perpetuity for those who follow in our footsteps” (and paddle strokes). There are many ways that you can help, whether through volunteering, contributing financial support as an individual or as a business, or even just telling people about the Vermont River Conservancy, but we really would like to hear about what projects are important to you.
So this winter, while you are sitting next to the wood stove or staring out the window at potential water for next spring, think about the special places you have enjoyed. Are there certain spots where access is particularly difficult? Are there areas that face possible development which would block access or impact the quality of the paddling experience? Are there spots that have special significance for the paddling community that could use protection in your area? Please let us know about potential projects by emailing: meyers@together.net or calling the office at (802) 862-7362. Or email me directly at mkiedaisch@hotmail.com. If you have the information, please include: the town or towns which the properties are located within, the name of the waterway, the reason you feel the area is important (for example: the landowner has put the property on the market, etc), and any history you feel is relevant. But any information will help, so don’t worry if you only have some of this info!
If you would like to find out more about Vermont River Conservancy, such as: completed projects that you may want to enjoy, what other groups and businesses support VRC, or other ways you can help out, please check out our web page www.vermontriverconservancy.org, which should be up in December. If you would like to be on the mailing list to receive our newsletter, email meyers@together.net, or call the number listed above. Thank you for your time, and happy paddling!

FS: Bell CJ Solo 15 (flatwater cruiser)

This beautiful 34 pound Kevlar canoe has been collecting dust for most of this season. I'm paddling whitewater 99% of the time these days, and I can't see letting this little gem sit idle.

All the wood is in great shape (regularly treated). The gelcoat is in excellent condition. It's been very well cared for. There has only been one minor cosmetic ding to the gelcoat in the front stem that I've repaired. Otherwise it's near mint condition.

Paddling characteristics and specifications are similar to those of the "Mad River Independence" or "Bell Magic/Merlin"

* Length: 15'8"
* Width at gunwales: 28.5"
* Width at waterline: ~29"
* Bow Height: 17.5"
* Stern Height 17.5"
* Depth at center: 12"
* Weight: Only 34lbs !!!!!
* Medium weight Kevlar
* Ash Gunwales
* Cherry Decks
* Extremely shallow arch hull
* Paddles like a dream....

Similarly built new canoes like this go for about $1900+

I will throw in a nearly new (used a few times) "Bending Branches Tailwind" wooden double-bladed/3 position-breakdown touring paddle sized for this canoe (new =$135), and a standard wood paddle.

I originally wanted to get $1100 for this canoe and the paddles, but will now consider the best reasonable offer (no trades). Can sell the paddle(s) separately from the canoe.

Come next season, flatwater paddlers will be looking to buy this canoe... Beat the others to it, and buy it now!

This canoe can be seen in Greenfield, MA. I will not transport it to view it. But, if you buy it, I can drive up to a couple hours to meet half way for delivery.

For pictures of this beautiful canoe go here:
