I have a Winonah 16' Sundowner (Kevlar) that I purchased this summer for $2200. It is a bit too responsive for my wife and me (both nearing 60), and I should like to sell it. The bottom has scratches; otherwise condition is quite good. I have lowered the seats about 3-4 inches. I might transport to show and would sell for half of what I paid.

No leaks or cracks. It's a great boat for learning most squirt moves, or roaming underwater doing mystery moves, or river running. It could be yours Fer $525.00

Hello all, please go to the USGS NH/VT River Gauges website and read the urgent alert regarding the funding for the online river gauge effort. Projected State budget cuts may put the funding for online gauges for 27 rivers in jeopardy, including the gauges on the Winooski, Lamoille, Black, Missisquoi and others. We NEED to use our voices on this, as this is a valuable service with importance beyond recreation. Please contact your legislators and urge them to maintain funding for the gauges. For more detail, please read the e-mail below responding to my inquiries about the matter.

Jason:

Thanks for your support. My understanding is that funding for the state
share of the network operations has been secured through June 30 (state
Fiscal Year -02). Funding for state FY-03 (starting July 1, 2002) will be
before the Vermont Legislature soon. The VT Dept of Environmental
Conservation is anticipating a difficult time getting the funding through
the Legislature due to the shortfalls in State revenues.

At this point, the most helpful action would be to make your concerns, as
an organization, known to your state legislators, who will eventually say
yea or nay to the funds.

The state's share of the cost is $5,650 per gage per year. USGS pays the
other half.

Just got this from my state rep on the river guage funding:
Deae Randy,
I just had a conversation with Gary Shultz at the Dept. of Environmental Conversation (in ANR)
and he assured me that the state is NOT going to abandon its support of the USGS on-line river
gauges. A month or two ago they were seriously comnsidering it but they were able to get the
cost shared by two other agencies of state government who also rely on the gauges: Agency of
Transportation and Emergency Management (part of Dept. of Public Safety). What he would like to
see would be some help for their cost borne by the power companies who have hydro-dams and that
makes some sense to me. That, however is an issue for the future; for now state funding is not
in question. I will try to keep an eye on this. Thank you for the heads-up, today I've learned
something I didn't know!
Sincerely, Ed Paquin

We are planning a trip to the North Lake Tahoe area over
April vacation and are looking for some first hand information on the
paddling around Truckee, Ca. ??? We will not have boats with us so I
also wanted to ask if anyone knows the outfitters in the area and
what they offer....we are planning some backcountry ski tours in the
high Sierras and suspect the water should be running well then too.
Any info will be greatly appreciated....gary c0ach@earthlink.net

Dear kayaker:

There are few places left in the world where experienced river runners can participate in first descents of major rivers.  In addition to an incredible river experience, a visit to parts of Tibet rarely seen by foreigners is truly unforgettable.

Earth Science Expeditions (ESE), a non-profit tax exempt research organization, is seeking participants for two Class III-IV first descents in Tibet in June, 2002. Maximum group size is 12, including the ESE trip leader, a Tibetan who speaks English and an English speaking representative from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We currently have two positions open for kayakers (hard shell or inflatable) and one position open for a raft passenger.  The purpose is to field check geological maps prepared from aerial photos along roadless stretches of major rivers, but a geological background is not necessary.

We're planning first descents of two large tributaries to the Yarlung Tsangpo, the Kyi Chi (Lhasa River) and the Raka Tsangpo.  We plan to float about 40 miles of the Lhasa River in three days, then about 75 miles of the Raka Tsangpo in five days.  On previous expeditions we visited Tibetan Buddhist monasteries along the river which have rarely, if ever, been visited by foreigners, in addition to visiting famous monasteries in major cities.  We should have this opportunity on both rivers.  Visits to remote monasteries have been one of the highlights for previous expedition participants.

Tentative dates are June 4 - 26, round trip from home, including 18 days in Tibet. We will confirm dates in March. Cost is $5000 round trip from Lhasa. We have a 3D, a 007, a Dancer XL and a T Slalom available if you do not want to bring your own boat. Round trip air travel cost from home to Lhasa (up to $1800), excess luggage fees (such as kayaks), visa ($60) and personal expenses (such as laundry and gifts) are not included. It is possible to spend more time in China/Tibet after the expedition at your own cost.

Earth Science Expeditions has successfully completed six first and second descents on rivers in Tibet and China in cooperation with the Center for International Scientific Exchange (CISE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Go to http://members.aol.com/pswinn/ese.html for more information about this expedition and links to descriptions of previous expeditions.

A $500 deposit is required to hold a position.  The deposit is fully refundable on request before April 1, at which time the balance is due.  If the expedition is cancelled before fees are paid to the Chinese goverment (May 1), we will refund your payments.

Hey Paddlers,
American whitewater is working to restore paddling on the Ausable river, through the chasm area. From a flow study done it looks to be class III/IV run with scoutable drops and water release potential. This would be a fantastic recource for paddling being just across the lake. American whitewater is looking for letters from paddlers stating they would like to paddle the river. All the instructions for what to do are on their website under the Ausable river article. Please help spread the word!

Outside Magazine's website has a section with information and dispatches from the Tsangpo River expedition now in progress, at this URL:

http://www.outsidemag.com/tsangpo/team/index.html

Personnel on this expedition include Scott Lindgren (trip leader), Dustin Knapp, Johnny and Willy Kern, and others. The river is running at an estimated 15,000 cfs -- considerably less than the ~40,000 experienced by the ill-fated expedition of Oct-Nov 1998.
