For Chace Mill (Winooski River) paddlers:
The green surf wave opposite the Waterworks atrium is up and looking good. The river is running at just over 4,000 cfs, which is pretty near the optimal level for this wave. (Of course the water is cold as hell, so be prepared.)

FYI -- Outside Online has an article on the effects of the east coast drought on rafting and other whitewater recreation. A couple of dam releases have been cancelled due to water conservation needs. However, the drought is worst near the coast than at higher elevations inland. (Also see the AWA web site. In SE Pennsylvania this is being called the worst drought in 125 years.)

See http://www.outsidemag.com/news/headlines/20020307_1.html.

For canoe trippers (and perhaps some expedition kayakers): There is an interesting and recently established web site (online in 2000) devoted to Canadian rivers and canoe tripping, especially in the Hudson Bay region. The site also has a lot of information about the status of Hydro-Quebec's development around James Bay, and information of specific interest to Keewaydin Camp alumni (the 100-year-old canoe tripping camp based on Lake Temagami, Ontario).

See http://www.ottertooth.com.

I wanted to follow up with some information on the Vermont River Conservancy primitive camping site on the Connecticut River. For those of you who were at the VPC meeting, I mentioned this site and several people expressed interest in checking it out. So, it turns out that there is no formal registration at this point. Camping spots are on a first come, first serve basis. So get there early and enjoy! It is located in the town of Bloomfield (VT side of the river), and is maintained by a local leadership school.

I lost my AT Edge bent shaft paddle while swimming on the New Haven Ledges yesterday (3/30). I would appreciate it if whoever finds it (eventually) could contact me at CCW@PKC.com or 802-264-3141 (home 863-2149). I hadn't gotten around to putting contact info on the paddle yet.*

The paddle was lost in the rapid above Lost Legs (the slides) -- the run-out below the second serious drop of the Ledges. We think it was pinned underwater against a pyramid-shaped rock on the river-left side. Attempts were made to retrieve it, but to no avail.

(The other specs are: length = 194 cm, feather = 45 degrees. The two blade faces are pretty well dinged up.)

-----------------------------
* Yes, I know...what a dork.
