Little river paddlers
As of 5/31 There are two trees that beavers cut down on the river right side just as you reach the take out,at Farr rd. You can sneak safely by hugging the river right shore.

I have a set of Malone cradles for sale. New last year. Paid $99.00, will sell for $50.00. These are the type of cradle that allow you to set the kayak on it's side. The fittings are for factory installed 3" roof bars, thus allowing you to use without having to purchase any additional bars.

The peak flows for last night -- of some northern Vermont rivers -- were pretty amazing:
Missisquoi (Swanton): 31,000 cfs
Lamoille (E. Georgia): 20,500 cfs
Winooski (Essex): 17,100 cfs

The Lamoille was still at flood stage at 8 PM tonight (barely). Its flow has exceeded 20,000 cfs only six times in the last 72 years.

NEWS for Chace Mill paddlers --

1) There is a large tree trunk (18" butt) lodged between the river left bank and the large strainer (pile of debris) stacked against the Chace Mill powerhouse structure. Water is flowing under it, and over ledge, with just enough of a gap to catch and hold a boat. THIS AREA SHOULD BE AVOIDED! If you don't want to run the main drops then run on the Champlain Mill side (river right) or put in downstream.

2) The Chace Mill will be paving the northwest parking lot -- our normal takeout -- from Thursday through Saturday, and possibly into Sunday. The lot will be inaccessible during that time, and probably unusable as a takeout. Paddlers can also take out at the west end of the Champlain Mill.

3) The green wave near Waterworks was at a *prime* level this morning up until at least 2 PM. I think the rain could be enough to sustain it into tomorrow. Look for a flow of 3,000-4,100 cfs on the online gauge.

Early morning levels at Chace Mill and Five Chutes --

At 5:45 AM the Winooski was running at 5,500 cfs and the Lamoille (E. Georgia) was at 5,000. The Winooski was about to start dropping, but the Lamoille was still rising slowly.* The Winooski might be at a good level by this afternoon.*

--Chris [863-2149 /h | 264-3141 /w]

-----------------------
* 5,500 is too high for the green wave at the Mill; it gets good at 3,000 - 4,100.
* 5,000 - 6,200 (? on the upper end) is a prime play level for the Lamoille's Five Chutes

Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters Presents Valhalla Film Premier for Charity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 7, 2002

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – On Saturday, June 22 Adirondack Lakes and Trails Outfitters (ALTO) will present Valhalla, an action packed feature length 16mm kayak film that celebrates the soulful relationship between human expression and the boundless beauty from which white waters flow.

Teton Gravity Research cinematographers Arden Oksanen and Trask McFarland thrill viewers with footage shot in Alaska, Colorado, Montana, California, Minnesota and at remote locations in countries such as Norway, Iceland, Croatia and Canada. In Montreal the crew surfs the lofty waves of the Lachine Rapids on the St. Lawrence, while off the eastern coast of Africa the film explores the extreme sport of canyaking on the Island of Reunion.

The film will debut at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts at 8:00 p.m. with all proceeds to benefit the Adirondack Paddlers Club and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Along with the film premier, ALTO will be offering paddling clinics on Saturday afternoon that include swift and open water rescue, Eskimo rolling and instruction on proper stroke technique.

Tickets for the event are available from ALTO, located at 168 Lake Flower Avenue, Saranac Lake, NY or by phone at 1-800-491-0414. Advance tickets for adults are $7.00 and $5.00 for students. All tickets sold at the door are $9.00.

All attendees will have an opportunity to register to win a week long Icelandic Adventure for two, a complete kayak package, a SportcamX and other great prizes in the Valhalla national sweepstakes from film sponsors Nike ACG, Dagger, Stohlquist, Paddler Magazine and Hooked on the Outdoors Magazine.

For tickets, clinic sign up and additional information, contact ALTO at 1-800-491-0414 or via email at info@adirondackoutfitters.com. You can also check out ALTO on the web at www.adirondackoutfitters.com.

Hey VPC members!
One of your lost is returning for a visit! I'll be in Vermont July 3-11. I'd love to boat on the Ottowa on my way west after my visit. That would be a mid week venture - driving on the 15th and paddling on the 16th (dates may be flexible). I don't know the river...but would love to paddle it with someone who does. Perhaps some paddling on July 6-7 would be good too? send a reply email if you're interested
cheers all

Hey VPC members! Just wanted to let you know that the third annual Salmon River Whitewater Festival will be held on Saturday, July 13th, from 6-11pm at Stoney's Pineville Campgrounds in Pulaski, NY. We will have boat demos, vendors, 50/50 raffle and Silent Auction to benefit AW, a bonfire and live music (hopefully!). Camping is $5 a head.

The Salmon River is a premiere recreational and instructional whitewater river located in Central New York. It boasts a pleasant class 1-2 Upper Section, great for beginners, which can be accessed from the campgrounds, and an exciting class 2-3 Lower Section on which to practice your hole-boating and surfing skills. This festival is held to support AW, as they were key in the establishment of the FERC agreement and the obtaining of whitewater releases on the Salmon. The release scheduled is 750cfs, and the river will flow at that level all weekend.

If you have questions, please feel free to email me, Michele, at kayakchick@hotmail.com.

Get your gear, grab your friends, and road trip to CNY for a fun and enjoyable paddling weekend. You won't regret it! :o)

Hello folks,

A couple of us are planning on running the Lower Lamoille Friday after work. The currently planned meeting time is 5:30 at the take-out. If you are interested, please drop me an email or call 434-5660 during the day, so we know who to expect.

Judging by the guage, the water should be at least at the 3,000 cfs level by the time we head out. If it looks too high for the average intermediate/advanced paddler, I'll post a note on message board at the VPC web page.

Hello,

It's looking as though the Lamoille may too high to run tonite, but I'm planning on running the Huntington from near the Audubon center to about 1/2 mi. above the gorge meeting at the takeout at 5:30. I checked the level and it's decent for a class 2-2 1/2 kayak run, but may be marginal for the open boats. We've three takers so far. Call if you want to join in at 434-5660.
