VPC-Happy New Year 2003 !
I did the Winni River Run on New Year's day and I'm beginning to think about spring paddling.
Is the VPC planning a Hudson River and or Gorge trip this year ? Any rough dates proposed ? It's time I start doing some rivers in New York. RC

You or someone you know may be interested in joining one of these non-commercial expeditions:

Shangri La River Expeditions is seeking kayakers and rafters for two first descent expeditions in August 2003: Salween in Tibet (Class 3-4, rafters and kayakers) and Rivers of the Gongga Shan Area west of Chengdu, Sichuan (Class 5, kayakers only). Previous expeditions have been the trip of a lifetime for participants.

Shangri La is a division of Earth Science Expeditions, a non-profit, tax exempt research organization which specializes in geological reconnaissance of river canyons in Tibet and western China. It has conducted numerous expeditions in China since its first one in 1994.

Go to www.shangri-la-river-expeditions.com for cost and schedule info (click on 2003 Expeditions at the bottom of the page). This site also has links to descriptions of previous expeditions, the history of first descents in Tibet and western China, the geography and geology of river canyons we've explored, and a summary of cultural history and the probable future of this area.

Please forward this message to others who may be interested.

This message is only sent once a year to people who have an interest in kayaking, rafting or canoeing. If you are not interested in these activities and do not want to receive this message next year, please reply with "no interest" in the subject box.

2003 National Paddling Film Festival Videos Announced! The volunteers of the NPFF are pleased to announce the competition lineup for the 20th annual National Paddling Film Festival. 25 of the freshest new paddling videos have been chosen to compete in what will surely be one of the toughest competitions in the history of the film festival. Due to the overwhelming response from talented paddlesport artists from across the country and the world the NPFF needed to be expanded so that we could bring more entries into this unique one day competition. The show will now run from 10am - 7pm (instead of 6pm) on Saturday Feb. 22, 2003. Thanks to all who entered the NPFF and we're extremely sorry that we didn't have enough time to allow ALL of the entries we received into the show. The quality of every one of the entries received this year was truly outstanding and on behalf of the volunteers working the fest I'd like to heartily thank all who took time to enter the non-profit NPFF and help us raise funds for American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, and other waterway conservation efforts. The NPFF film committee considers all of the 25 final entries to be winners but now it will be up to the judges and the audience to determine which of the 25 Amateur, Accomplished and Professional videos will become the final 2003 NPFF award winners. So be sure to attend the show in Lexington,KY and view the very best in paddlesport videos and images. Many of the entries in this year's festival have never before been shown and will be premiering on the big screen of the Kentucky Theater for the first time. Check out the 2003 NPFF lineup on the web here: http://www.surfbwa.org/npff/entries_03.html Plus, there is still time to enter the Best Paddling Image Competition - deadline for entries is Feb 14 - so dig through some of those great shots you took on the river and enter them in the show today! In a departure from previous years the NPFF will be holding part of the Best Paddling Image competition online where you can vote for your favorite image by email anytime from Feb. 15 - 20. In thanks for voting your name could be chosen to win a boating video for helping the NPFF choose the 6 image finalists that will compete in the Best Paddling Image Award at the Kentucky Theater on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003. Visit the NPFF web pages for more info and to view the competiting images. Note that all the competing images will be posted online from Feb 15 -20, 2003 http://www.surfbwa.org/npff/best_image03.html

Hello all VPC members and local paddlers,

Looking for anyone interested in contributing slides to update the photo archives for the VPC website. Any type of paddling shot would be great, although there is already an abundance of class IV and up. Slides will be scanned, then returned to their proud owners. Drop me an email if you have some stuff!

Hi all, I just moved up here from Towanda, PA. I'm looking forward to meeting some new paddling buddies. I paddle class II-IV, some V but I'm not to big on steep creeking. I love to stop and play in every hole and surf every wave. I mailed my VPC membership form in today and I just wanted to say hello to everyone. Thanks, Jay

UVM Catayak Club Liquidlogic is proud to sponsor an evening with a true original . . . One of the most accomplished and respected ambassadors to the whitewater paddling community, Willie Kern has dedicated his life to exploring the natural world from the seat of his kayak. With decades of experience gathered from first descents on nearly every continent, perhaps most notably a recent first descent down Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo, Willie is recognized internationally as the voice on communication and safety on the river. His humble presence and relentless passion have influenced river education, instruction and conservation. Respected by generations of paddlers, Willie is committed to spreading his knowledge and love of water as an instructor for Tarkio Kayak Adventures.
