Sorry about this long message but it is important for all of us. American Whitewater representative for the region has posted the following message on various message boards in the region.

The Army Corp of Engineers recently embraced a policy that either reduces or eliminates entirely, whitewater flows on some of New England's most popular early season runs. This new method of calculating seasonal runoff totally screws boaters out of the historical releases they have been getting for the last 25-40 years.
Most notably, the Corps has reduced the spring West River releases from 1,500 to 1,000 cfs, a level that will be problematic for many upper novice and intermediate boaters. They have also eliminated one day of the fall releases on the West this year.

They have also reduced or cancelled traditional releases on the Millers, Blackwater, and Setucket Rivers.

BUT TODAY-- THEY ARE RELEASING 2,200+ ON THE WEST BUT INTEND TO ACTUALLY RELEASE LESS THAN AVERAGE INFLOW ON THE SPRING RELEASE DAYS.

Help American Whitewater, New England FLOW, the MVP, and the AMC to fight this policy. The Corps intends to limit or negate boater participation in any decision they make regarding whitewater recreation at their projects.

CONTACT THE CORPS NOW BY VOICING YOUR DISPLEASURE AT THIS DECISION. PLEASE COPY THE FOLLOWING LETTER AND EMAIL IT AT ONCE TO THE TWO CORPS STAFFERS IDENTIFIED BELOW. IF YOU KNOW YOUR CONGRESSMAN'S ADDRESS OR EMAIL, COPY HIM ALSO.

WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW. IF THE CORPS SUCCEEDS IN NEW ENGLAND THIS WILL BE THE FORERUNNER TO A POLICY THAT WILL AFFECT ALL OF THEIR PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE NATION.

Thanks for your help. Tom C.

By Email: Richard.C.Carlson@usace.army.mil

Attention: Mr. Richard C. Carlson

Dear Mr. Carlson:

I am writing to express my concern over the recent Corps decision to inhibit, restrict, or otherwise eliminate entirely, scheduled whitewater releases from Corps dams on rivers throughout New England. Specifically I am referring to the Millers River in central Massachusetts, the Blackwater in southern New Hampshire, the Setucket River in Connecticut, and the West River in southern Vermont.

This action by the Corps has the practical effect of eliminating water-based recreation at the above facilities and clearly is not in keeping with the Corps responsibility to promote recreation at its facilities.

I request these recreational flows be reinstated immediately and the USACE work with American Whitewater, the Appalachian Mountain Club, New England FLOW, and many other smaller boating organizations throughout New England who represent their members on these recreational opportunities each year.

These recreational releases create an important revenue stream into the rural areas that host these releases, and now these economic opportunities will also be lost, causing hardship to those residents who depend on this income each boating season.

Please revoke the Corps decision to reduce whitewater boating opportunities, especially on the West River in Jamaica, Vermont. Reverse this bad decision at once.

Sincerely,

A letter to your local representative would also be helpfull. To find out your local rep and e-mail him go to:

From looking at the gauges, all the local rivers seem pretty low. Is there any snow left in the hills to melt into whitewater? I would like to get out and paddle something on Monday (had to work all weekend) if anything is running class 2 to 4. Anyone have Monday off and planning a trip? Send me an e-mail. Thanks.
