GMP reports 1.2 inches of rain in Marshfield VT today between 7 am and 2 pm, and the rain continues to fall. Joe's Pond is at 1.9 and rising, even while they generate a full load of 1100 kw (124 cfs). The runoff will accelerate tonight, and Joe's Brook will be running strong by Saturday morning, May 4th. To make things more unpredictable, GMP is obligated by the state to deflate the bladder to minimize shoreline flooding on Joe's Pond whenever the pond height exceeds 2.2 ft. This could well be the case by Saturday morning.

For those of you still interested in joining me for this bootleg trip tomorrow, beware that I may opt out if on arrival in West Danville the level looks too treacherous. It is a very steep run and nothing I would trifle with in flood.

My backup paddling plan could include the Willoughby River, the Ompompanoosuc, the Waits, or perhaps the Wild Ammonoosuc in NH. These would all be exploratory trips for me, so if anyone reads this and has knowledge of these runs please post a message here, or phone or email me.

So many rivers, so little time!

I am looking to meet up with a group of paddlers Sunday to get some more photos. I would prefer if they were paddling something that does not have any photos posted to AW (that is pretty much most of Vermont). I don't boat so the river would have to be easy to hike to. you can either send me an e-mail at rogerspat@hotmail.com or call me at 879-7835. Thanks, Patrick

Hi Everyone,

The water is great today. On the Winooski river on the class iii section below the power station dam between east montpelier and montpelier, on the old power house rapid. There is a log across the entry area. At this level you just run river left. Just so anyone going knows about it. There are big holes out there today.

Peace,
dave

Hi members of the Vermont Club.

I'm a New Zealander currently in Veneuzuela (and have paddled with a few members of your club before) - and thought I'd pass on a big tip to you.
Go Paddling down here in sunny Venezuela.
Its amazing - everything from the Mochima National park - beautiful paddling aroung deserted islands (with heaps of sun and fun!) to open water padling (just finished a Margarita Island to Playa Colarada trip - amazing!!, to paddling in the jungle!!!! (Orinocco Delta - third largest in the world with 20,000 miles of waterways and very very primitive - quite spectatulor wildlife)
So instead of waiting for the waters to warm? - head down here.
If you are I reccomend jakera tours (jakera.com) I hired all my gear off them. They have some great boats (new kevlar singles, fiberglass doubles - - all in great condition) and organised all the tranpost , pick ups for me aaat a very low cost.

Well - happy paddling - and I{ll be down here for another 3 months paddling so if you want some company give me an email.

Hi all,
If it really rains from Saturday into Monday, Joe's Brook should be at a boatable level on Memorial Day Monday May 26th (Memorial Day). The weather service is predicting a total rainfall around 1 inch statewide, and Joe's Pond according to GMP this morning (Friday May 23rd) is "full" at 1.9 feet. A steady weekend rain will spoil a lot of folks outdoor plans, sorry to say, but it also could make for great boating on Joe's Brook Monday!

I am leaving town until late Sunday night, but if you want me to get in touch with you when I get back to VT with a pond level and river forecast for Memorial Day please:
1) respond to this email.
2) leave a BRIEF message including you name, phone number(s) where I can reach you, and whether you prefer me to phone or email (and at what time) early Monday morning.

The meeting place is at the Joe's Pond dam, at the easternmost end of Joe's Pond, W. Danville VT, about 10 miles due west of St. Johnsbury at the jct. of US Rte. 2 and VT Rte. 15. Meet at 10 am, run shuttle to various road crossings downstream of the dam,and put-in at the powerhouse by 11 am. The entire run drops 1000 feet in 10 miles to its confluence with the Passumpsic River, with some class I-II, innumerable III ledges, a gorge section, and a couple of portageable IV rapids in a pristine valley.

I will confirm this Monday paddling plan with anyone who replies to this email, and I will do so late Sunday or first thing Monday morning.
Tony Shaw
cell phone: 802-324-8497
home phone: 802-879-1655

PS: Water levels at Joe's are tricky to predict, so I can make no promises as to the level.
