Nick Clark and I did the work last Sunday (October 11). Due to time constraints we had to leave 12-14 feet of the birch tree coming off the river-left bank, but that section was above the water (fairly deep at that point) and free of branches. It is very easy to avoid by staying in the center or right-of-center in the channel.
The sections we left in the river are ~10 feet or less in length, and should readily flush downstream the next time the river comes up to a runnable level.
